The reaction of Y2O3, BaCO3, and CuO produces YBa2Cu307-x with CO2(g) as the only by-product. Write a balanced chemical equation of this reaction and determine the value of x.

The reaction is shown below,

  Y2O3+BaCO3+CuOYBa2Cu3O7x+CO2

Balance the equation,

Balance the yttrium atom in the given equation, when balancing the equation, we should not alter the subscripts and we can change coefficients.  There are two yttrium atoms in the left side and one yttrium atoms in the right side.  Therefore two molecules of YBa2Cu3O6.5 is added to right side of reaction.  Therefore the balanced equation is given below.

  Y2O3+BaCO3+CuO2YBa2Cu3O7x+CO2

Balance the barium atom in the given equation, there are four barium atoms in the right side and one barium atoms in the left side.  Therefore four molecule of barium carbonate is added to left side of reaction.  Therefore the balanced equation is given below.

  Y2O3+4BaCO3+CuO2YBa2Cu3O7x+CO2

Balance the carbon atom in the given equation, there are four carbon atoms in the left side and one carbon atom in the right side.  Therefore four molecule of carbon dioxide is added to right side of the reaction. Therefore the balanced equation is given below.

  Y2O3+4BaCO3+6CuO2YBa2Cu3O7x+4CO2

According to the balancing equation, all the atoms gets balanced other than oxygen
