Explanation of Solution

a) HCl+O2H2O+Cl2

H atom is balanced first, because it occurs in only one compound on each side of the equation as follows:

2HCl+O2H2O+Cl2

In the next step, O atom is balanced by multiplying the coefficient 1/2 with O2 as follows:

2HCl+12O2H2O+Cl2

Now, the equation is technically balanced, however multiply both the sides of the equation by 2 in order to clear coefficient fractions, such as 1/2, as follows:

[2HCl+12O2H2O+Cl2]×2

So, the balanced equation can be represented as follows:

4HCl+O22H2O+2Cl2

b) NO2+H2OHNO3+NO
