Textbook Problem

Discuss Concepts Based on material in this chapter and in Chapter 42 on endocrine controls, outline some possible causes and physiological effects of calcium deficiency in an active adult.

Summary Introduction

To review:

The probable causes and physiological effects of calcium deficiency in adults.

Introduction:

During the life of a vertebrate, minerals such as calcium and phosphate ions are constantly deposited and withdrawn from the bones. These ions are stored in the endoskeleton from where they are released as per the requirement to maintain the levels of these ions in body fluids.

Explanation

Causes and physiological effects of calcium deficiency in humans:

In humans and other mammals, the thyroid gland secretes a peptide hormone calcitonin. When Ca2+ levels in the blood rise above the normal range, calcitonin secretion is enhanced, whereas reduced levels of Ca2+ inhibit its secretion. The parathyroid hormone (PTH) is secreted when there is a fall in blood Ca2+ levels. Production of PTH and Ca2+ ions is related closely. Underproduction of PTH reduces Ca2+ concentrations in the bloodstream...
