  • P-N Junction is a device in which ‘p-type’ semiconductor and ‘n-type’ semiconductor are linked.
  • Rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current to direct current.

Explanation of Solution


Understand the construction of P-N junction and how it does it work.

A p-type semiconducting material and an n-type semiconducting material are combined to form a P-N junction. It carries current only when negative terminal is connected to n-type semiconducting material and p-type semiconducting material connected to positive terminal.

A typical n-type semi- conductor has excess electrons whereas p-type semiconductor has positively charged holes. When both these semi-conductors are connected and subjected to external potential, the electrons from n-type semi-conductor diffuses to the positive holes of the p-type semi-conductor. This happens only if the p-type semiconductor connected to positive terminal and n-type semiconductor connected to negative terminal. This set up is known as forward bias. This flow of electrons from a negative terminal to positive terminal is known as direct current.
