Expert Solution
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The number of significant figures in each of the given numbers is to be determined.

Concept Introduction:

Significant figures are those digits in a number that carry meaning towards the resolution of the measurement.

The digit which is not a zero is significant digit.

If the zero is lies between two non-zero digit then it is a significant digit.

If a zero is placed in left to the non-zero digit then it is not a significant digit.

If a zero is placed in right to the last non-zero digit in a decimal then it is a significant

Answer to Problem A1.1YT

Solution:

a) Two significant figures.

b) Three significant figures.

c) Three significant figures.

d) Five significant figures.

e) Five significant figures.

Explanation of Solution

a) 0.0087

In 0.0087, 8 and 7 are significant but the leading zeros mark the decimalonly and are not significant. Therefore, the number has two significant figures.

b) 4.50×105

In 4.50×105, besides 4 and 5, the trailing zero is also significant. Therefore, the number has three significant figures.

c) 45.5

Since all the three digits in 45.5 are significant. Therefore, the number has three significant figures.

d) 164.09

Since all the give digits in 164.09 are significant, the number has five significant figures.

e) 0.98850

In 0.98850, all the four digits and the trailing 0 are significant. Therefore, the number has five significant figures.
