One of these great sculptures is called the Gates of Hell, created by Auguste Rodin who was influenced by Dante Alighieri’s, Inferno. In the beginning of Canto 3 of the Inferno, Dante and Virgil are about to walk through the gates to the underworld. Although the entrance is referred to as an arch in the Inferno this gave Rodin a blank slate to work with.
