historians work as archivists and the sub-fields of public history include museum professionals, archivists, curators, oral historians, historic preservationist, professors, and teachers. They can also work as government and business historians, historical consultants, cultural resource managers, film and media producers, and policy advisors. In a sense, Public History is applied history because it refers to the diverse ways in which history is practiced and the various way in which public historians
On January 27th, 2015 I went to the Waterloo Regional Museum located in the city of Kitchener, Ontario. The museum scrutinizes the First Nations people, European settlement at the start of the 1800, the manufacturing peak of the 1900`s and the high sector boom of recent years. Many of the historical artifacts and paintings reminded me of some of the themes discussed in the Discovering the Humanities course. The story of human social development as displayed in the Waterloo Regional Museum focuses
“Are we Alone? the history of astronomy has shaped the course of human society, connecting science with human spirituality and sense of wonder at the unimaginable vastness of the cosmos”. (Shuttleworth). Astronomy is the branch of science that deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe. Ancient astronomers attempted to explain religion rather than explain natural phenomenon. Religion can be defined as a belief in, or an acknowledgement of some superhuman power or powers (ex
standardized testing. Justification Throughout history there has been an achievement gap between whites and minorities due to the history of inadequate education standards. In present research the achievement gap have shown a negative correlation on the future of many minority students. “When this academic gap is considered in terms of math and science achievement, the implications become even more troublesome. In today’s society, engineering and technology are extremely important because they relate
progress in life sciences, particularly in genetic engineering, is changing our concept of "human being" and a whole series of other philosophical and common notions. The conventional idea of "subject" will no longer be the final reference for philosophical thinking, since even the subject qua biological or psychological structure will enjoy a high degree of unpredictability. The results of gene technology require reinterpreting such concepts as reproduction, individuality, history, freedom and subjectivity
Evolution of Forensic Science Forensic science is a broad term that refers to the use of science or technology in a court room environment. Forensic science plays an important role in modern popular culture; the police procedural is highly dependent upon cutting-edge forensic science. Moreover, many people are aware of the impact of DNA testing on the modern criminal justice landscape. However, forensic science actually predates many modern scientific advances; almost as long as there have been
The question posed for this microtheme asks the difference between science and technology. This has been a question I’ve pondered in the past. My personal viewpoint is that as long as there is a profit to be made, discoveries will be exploited. Science relies on technology to pursue science, meaning more technology developed to support further pursuit. The line is very blurred for me. Are scientists merely messengers making discoveries, inadvertently helping others advance their position by exploitation
staple of criminal investigations. There is a rich history of fingerprints being used, it can be traced back to ancient times and had a variety of different uses. The science behind fingerprints explains why they are unique, the different patterns that are comprised on the fingers and lastly the different types of prints there are and what makes them different from one another. What I will begin to discuss in this paper begins with history and basic science of fingerprints, with the process
succumbed glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer that is incurable; however, her legacy lives on through what in the past was just science fiction. Kim’s brain is cryogenically frozen in the hopes that it one day can be mapped and her conscious be uploaded to a computer. Experts in the field of neuroscience disagree whether or not the process is possible as time and technology are potent variables. Despite being riddled with moral, fundamental, and scientific questions Kim raised funding via her online
History and Philosophy of Science The world of science, as we know it today, is a difficult subject to grasp. So many new ideas are present and these new ideas are not interchangeable. Some parts do work together although as a whole they don’t fully coincide with each other. The three basic ideas that science is now based upon come from Newton, Einstein, and Hawking. I call these ideas/theories “new” based on what I classify the state of the scientific community of today. After looking at what
