When I think of issues concerning the police force, one of the first things that comes to mind is the distrust between police and the community. Another topic of concern deals with issues of racism. The media seems to constantly have a story concerning a police officer and a suspect of a minority. If I were a police chief, these would be the issues I tried to correct first. In order to correct these issues, I would focus on education and training of the police force. I believe that by focusing on these
In modern day society, the police force is meant to safeguard the lives of those they serve, to eliminate crime, to ensure public safety, and to do so in an honorable fashion. They are meant to be respected and trusted by those they potentially "protect." Children often looked at them as modern day superheroes. At some point however, something changed and the neighborhood hero transformed into the villain. What happens when the ones people reach out to in a time of distress become the ones causing
agencies have policies regarding use of force that need reform. There is concern for the balance of ethical decision making by police officers. There is also an equal concern for the rights and value of life of civilians along with those of officers. Maintaining stress-free standards for employed law enforcement is detrimental to police use of force directives. Police organizations can prevent and correct their citizen interaction without the use of excessive force. It is imperative that a process be
of excessive force was caught on videotape. Excessive force is defined as “force not justified by law or policy”. (Pollock ,2015,p.160) Reports have estimated that around 1.3 to 2.5 percent of all encounters involve excessive force.(Worden and Catlin,2002,p.160) The biggest factors that lead to excessive force can be race, gender, gang membership, and suspect use of force. Police officers that use excessive force can be involved in many ethical dilemmas that can be based on their police training and
Use of force The use of force in law enforcement is unavoidable. In most cases the wellbeing of the officer and the patient can be put in dangerous circumstances by not using force when necessary. Both police and correctional officers and all other law enforcement officers use force to maintain order, enforce the law, and to keep people safe. The use of force by law enforcement is the amount of effort that is required by the enforcer to compel compliance by a person that is unwilling to comply.
The use of excessive force by police officers is a topic that continues to make headlines and a study that needs to be done. Although much research has gone into this topic there still is no consensus on why the use of excessive force occurs. Some studies suggest lack of training and/or problems with organization policy/procedures. Law enforcement officers are authorized to use force when necessary, but when the level of force is excessive, however, the actions of the police come under scrutiny.
ISSUE: Excessive Force and Unethical Police Operations RULE: First precept of Natural Law: “That good is to be done and pursued, and evil is to be avoided” ANALYSIS: Over the last decade a mounting problem has begun to emerge involving public safety across the United States. The arrival of new technology is effectively exposing a problem within our police forces that in the past was overlooked and labeled insignificant or as isolated cases. Currently public safety forces across the nation are rapidly
on this as the National Police Force isn't a typical organization that tries to stay competitive as it has the monopoly on the market and therefore does they not need to be in a leading position. However, the National Police Force is very much dependent on the environment it operates in as they constantly have to adapt to new crimes and follow the development of the world. Therefore, is contingency theory important in analyzing this case because the National Police Force operates in an environment
my research on “police use of force”, and the shooting that took place in Chicago with unarmed black male LaQuan McDonald. Questions we are trying to see are: 1. Why did the officer shoot him so many times, 2. What difference does it make if a person committed a crime if the officer contacting them didn't know about it?, 3.What about all of these police shootings, 4. Are officer’s trained
on the police officer. While most professions allow for careful thought and planning, a police officer is often thrust into a situation with little advanced intelligence about what is occurring. Often an officer is involved in a situation which has the potential to turn violent. Relying on training allows the officer to successfully navigate a variety of situations. After a few years on the job, even the rookie police officer is aware that they live and
