In the documentary “Blackfish”, directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, she discussed the harmful events that have occurred when keeping killer whales contained for show and entertainment purposes. Cowperthwaite argued the fact that the killer whales become aggressive when held captive in an area too small for them and separated from their families. Throughout the documentary there were many horrifying stories about the attacks told by people who had saw the tragedies first-hand. Blackfish shows all of rhetorical situations throughout the documentary. The rhetor in Blackfish is Gabriela Cowperthwaite, the director. The audience is Sea World customers or potential customers. The purpose of the documentary Blackfish is to inform people on how damaging mentally and physically it is to keep an orca whales captive. The exigence in this documentary is that holding killer whale’s captive and it is very dangerous mentally and physically to the whale, but also can be dangerous for the workers. The constraints in Blackfish is that the film may appear to be slightly biased against SeaWorld, making the audience see only one side of the issue. The affordances are you get to see live footage from the harmful attacks and listen to real life stories that people that witnessed it. Cowperthwaite goes on and appealeed to Pathos, Ethos, and Logos to create awareness on the harm of keeping killer whale’s captive. Cowperthwaite used Pathos to get the audience emotionally connected into the film. She used an emotional appeal to help the audience stay invested throughout the film. She started the documentary by showing all the tricks that the Orca Whales can perform, to get the audience intrigued by what they are capable of in the SeaWorld business. Cowperthwaite then goes onto show how the Orca whales were trained to do the tricks. This is when the mood of the film changes from the whales putting on amazing shows to the devastating reality behind how they are trained to do them. She showed live footage of the whales be starved and forced to do the tricks over and over again. The whales were finally fed after the trainer was satisfied by their performance.
