Please read and study the case “Introducing Scrum at P2P” in Larson and Gray, 6e, pages 609-613. Please prepare your answers to the following questions (1.5 line spacing, maximum 4 pages) and submit your answer document to Canvas. Please also bring your answers to class for our discussion. Part A: 1. How well is Scrum working? The case is basically a tale of two sprints. During the first sprint, Scrum guidelines were adhered to and significant progress was made on the project. The team has evolved into self organizing group and is energized. Unfortunately during the second sprint, the project deviated from Scrum guidelines and the team seems less energized and productivity has declined. 2. What are the issues confronting …show more content…
Still on the surface Isaac appears to have justification for making changes if his assertions that much of Sprint 2 work would otherwise be a waste of time. This reflects a dilemma when using iterative methodologies like Scrum. On the one hand the purpose of locking in Sprint work is to provide focus and certainty so that the team can work uninterrupted on the project. On other hand, the Sprint Planning meeting is based on the best information available at that time, and what to do when contradictory information surfaces is problematic. Most Scrum advocates argue that you have to trust the process and that in the end you are better off adhering to the rules. Conversely, a case could be made that in situations such changes would be justified. Ultimately this is a judgment call, but such instances should be rare and clearly warranted. At first glance Prem’s violation of the Scrum rule that Sprint deadlines can not be changed seems minor compared to his other transgressions. Still this can quickly become a slippery slope if it becomes the norm rather the exception. The purpose of having set Sprint times is to take time out of trade-off equation. The team focuses only what it is capable of accomplishing given its resources within the sprint time frame. This forces the team to tackle tough questions early rather than later. 3. Assume you are Kendra. What would you want to say at the retrospective? How would you say

Instead of noticing the positive change in production during their direct involvement with the team leaders, the manager and assistant manager instead decided to step back once productivity, and their bonus, returned in a slight way; only for the organization to fall short again. In order for team leaders to perform productively, the manager needs to take accountability in the leadership skills that are non-existent amongst staff, get their team morale back up with involvement and goal setting, and then wastage can be properly looked at. As part of an incentive program at Barrie Super Subs, team leaders were granted a food allowance for working four and a half hours continuously. Team leaders felt that the food allowance was a meager incentive to receive as most of them did not even apply for the incentive as many of the shifts given to them were only three or four hours in length. They would still help themselves to food and drinks when the managers weren’t around and wastage was still an issue. The manager thought by initially restricting the food allowance to those who worked six or more hours would correct the wastage problem, however; it worsened and eventually the food allowance being removed as an incentive for the team leaders all together was the way

The symptoms of this case are 2 employees, Millar and Boyce not meeting the daily quota of lengths. The team was not able to meet the deadline set by Parker because Millar and Boyce did not meet the daily goals. Since the deadline was not met, each team member would not receive the bonus of $300. Another symptom is Millar's lack motivation towards the end of the project.
Post these responses directly in your private student journal. Your assignment is due Wednesday, April 10th. Then a forum will open for each of these assignment questions. Please write two-to-three paragraphs per question.
Agile is an iterative and incremental (evolutionary) approach to software development which is performed in a highly collaborative manner by self-organizing teams within an effective governance framework, with "just enough" ceremony, that produces high quality solutions, in a cost effective and timely manner which meets the changing needs of its stakeholders [1].
