19th Century Texas Politics

During the first part of the 19th century, Texas was one of the many Old South plantation cultures who relied on slave labor along with the patron system. Such societies as this had a government whose only role was to secure and preserve the social order in their respective society. Local issues were handled at a local level. However, at the turn of the century, many changes in the political parties caused a disenfranchisement of society, especially for black and poverty stricken white which evolved into furthering the governmental roles and creating separate and definitive political parties.
