I. INTRODUCTION
As the first South American city to host the Olympic Games, famous for its natural and beautiful landscapes, the “Marvelous City,” as Brazilians call it, is sure to make the 2016 Summer games sensational (Brazil Tour). Rio di Janeiro will be the host for The Olympic and Paralympic games in 2016. The worldwide recognition brought by the FIFA World Cup 2014, will boost the spectators interest to this international sporting celebration. The strong and latent economy of Brazil will help to successfully host the almost two month event. Rio will deliver games of the highest technical standard, building on the experience of the successful 2007 Pan American games. Rio 2016 will be a powerful catalyst for progress in sport and society for individuals and communities within Brazil and throughout the world. Brazil will be an active and collaborative partner to support the IOC and IPC in promoting the Olympic and Paralympic values worldwide.
The Rio de Janeiro bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics was submitted on September 7, 2007 and week later was recognized as an applicant city. By June 4, 2008 the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board, shortlisted Rio along with three of the six applicants: Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo. After three failed attempts to host the Olympic and Paralympic games in 1936, 2004 and 2012, Rio de Janeiro was finally given its chance at the 121st IOC Session.

It is evident that hosting the Olympics games is no walk in the park. The countries trusted with this task have to spend billions to make the games a reality. Some people believe that the countries, even after spending billions of dollars benefit from the games, while others believe that the money can be spent elsewhere more efficiently. To reach a conclusion, one must study all of the different impacts in all of the different sectors the games have.
The Olympics were revived in 1896 thanks to Pierre de Coubertin. Since its reemergence in 1896, the modern Olympic movement has been shaped and influenced politically through the tensions between countries, economically through financial gain opportunity, and socially by promoting women’s rights. Another document I would like to have seen would be one containing a record of third world countries that have attended the Olympics. This document would have shown how wealth effects and shapes the modern Olympics.
Throughout the history of the Olympic games, there has been many changes on how the Olympic Games has come to be interpreted and how they are generally viewed in our modern era. These views range from, Nationalism fueled by the Olympic Games, Women trying to create equality through the Olympic Games, Economic supremacy shown by the Olympic games and the responsibilities held by countries and the self-preservation of a country when presenting the Olympic games. Each view states an interpretation of the Olympic games through the years of 1892-2002 showing a distinct view on the Olympic games depending on the times they were hosted at such as when the Olympic Games were hosted when women weren’t equal to men or who the Games were hosted
The 1896 Olympics may be remembered because it was the Game that started it all but there was much room for improvement. The next two Games were both disasters. The 1908 Games of London saved the Olympics from disappearing. The 1904 Games in St. Louis were considered as one of the worst Games ever.
As a sporting mega-event, the Olympic Games have numerous social impacts on the people, not only on those from the host country, but on individuals all over the globe.
The Olympic Games are recognized globally by billions of people. This event is the biggest sporting event not only because it comes once every four years, but also because the world’s best athletes come together to compete for world fame and glory. Hosting the games seems like an honor for most people, however there is numerous risks involved
Most nations are incapable and unqualified to host such a spectacle as the Olympic games. Every country and their presidents strive to mask their weaknesses and show their strength as an international power. The reasons why these peevish nations are bidding to host the Olympics are expressed through their belief and want to announce their arrival to the world stage. What they do not realize is the time and effort required into hosting such a demanding event. For example, in Rio Olympics Cause ‘Real Problems’ In Brazil, Mario Tama writes, “the popular leftist government that presided over its boom years, began to unravel, as if on cue for the big events”(Fortune International). Obviously, Brazil did not have the economic and political strength to survive hosting both the World Cup and Olympic games within two years of each other. It is imperative for the Olympic Games Board of Directors to perform better when deliberating between their choices of hosts. Most countries end of biting more than they can chew regardless of their economic
Unfortunately, the price tag, of well over $10 billion for the event, is adding to the already considerable strain on government budgets in Brazil. Faced with nasty recession, cuts in public services, and rising unemployment, bands of Brazilians, have turned out the protest, what is seen as wasteful spending and misallocation of resources on the Olympics. Throw in the growing threat of the Zika virus, and Brazil may end up with larger crowds of agitators protesting the government than of sports fans cheering on the athletes. Also they would get so much money from hosting the Olympics, along with that they would be better off money wise then before the Olympics were held
It is estimated that 1.5 million Brazilians may be infected. It is of great concern to nearly every country because Rio de Janeiro Brazil is the host of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. The
It all started with the Greeks. In ancient times the Olympic games were more of a religious gathering and celebration to honor Zeus. What first started out as a festival ended up being the first Olympic game in Olympia. However, now it has spread all around the world and is celebrated in everywhere. Recently, Brazil was the last to host the Olympic games in 2016, but caused controversy due to various factors that involved Brazil’s economy, environment, and politics. Due to the chaos that leaked from Brazil’s hosting of the Olympic games, officials are skeptic on which countries should and shouldn’t host the Olympic games. Per Contra, there have been many other successfully hosted Olympic games such as Great Britain, Beijing, and Canada. After
The negative impact of recent Olympic Games on the host country has caused controversy on whether this event is sustainable. The Olympics have a huge impact on the economic, social, and environmental aspects of the country, but the multiple viewpoints show that everyone perceives these impacts differently. Furthermore, assuming that one aspect brings positive impacts to the country, there is always a chance that another aspect is influenced differently. The cost of the Games is one of the largest impacts on the country, and the Olympic Games in 2008 cost $42 billion alone (aperianglobal.com). Additional factors, such as the pollution caused or the drawbacks of tourism, have also led the media to question whether the Olympics are worth the
After the 1984 Los Angeles Games showed for the first time that mega-events could produce an economic surplus, mega-sport events, particularly the Olympic Games, acquired central status for city and national government development agendas (Andranovich, Burbank and Heying, 2001). And the appeal of hosting a mega-event, or more specifically a mega-sport event, has grown significantly over the
Every four years a different country hosts the Olympics. Every two years its either the Winter or Summer Olympics. It is two thousand sixteen and in August, everybody eyes are going to be glued to their televisions when Rio host the two thousand sixteen Summer Olympics in Brazil. Many cities around the world put bids in advance to hold the Olympics. The Olympics are a big deal and you have to have the resources to host it. You need to have facilities for the sports, transportation, Olympics villages for the athletes to stay, a stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies, and most of all money. Cities tend to lose money when hosting the Olympics. Sometimes the facilities they use get abandon and are never used again. They are many reasons for a city to host the Olympics, but there are three reasons to not. Reasons for not hosting it because it is expensive, there no guarantee of profits or increase tourism in the host city, and to many buildings being left abandoned
Higham (1999) discusses that there are numerous problems, which will be evaluated with hosting an Olympic games such as, development issues, local resident issues, short-term affects, and security issues. In terms of development issues, there is a significant cost dealing with large scale sporting events, and economic benefits are generally received more by big time business interests not the host community. So the host community doesn’t benefit as much as they potentially could by hosting the
The Games are held every four years in a different city and in 2012 London will be hosting the Games. London hosted the Olympic games previously in 1908 and 1948 and the upcoming games will make London the only city in the world to have hosted the Games three times.
