The founder of the Atkins Diet, a cardiologist Dr. Robert C. Atkins, published his diet in 1972 in his phenomenally popular book titled "Diet Revolution." The diet immediately came under intense scathing criticism from many nutrition and diet experts who were stunned by its recommendations.

However, in the midst of the criticism, dieters ' apathy towards the effectiveness of low-fat diets which were being promoted by most nutritionist and dietetics reawakened interest in low-carb diets. This consequently led to the resurgence and massive popularity of the revised version of the Atkins Diet in his "New Diet Revolution" book. While staying true to its fundamental principles, Dr. Atkins has made several revisions to his popular diet program.

The Atkins Diet and other similar diets which have adopted its underlying principles have achieved remarkable results. This includes the Johns Hopkins which started and continues using a modified version of the Atkins Diet in 2003 to help treat epilepsy in both children and adults.
