The Atkins Diet has become increasingly popular, and is possibly one of the most well known nutritional weight-loss plans that we have today. This diet was first designed by an American cardiologist by the name of Dr. Robert Atkins. The Atkins diet was officially created in 1972 as a low-carbohydrate eating plan that encourages the intake of proteins and fats as a source of weight loss. This diet, also known as the Atkins Nutritional Approach, focuses on the increase in carbohydrates ultimately makes the body burn fat for energy instead of carbs. When doctor Atkins first began to develop this weight loss plan it was highly criticized by many mainstream experts and dietitians, because his ideologies went against many experts opinions on weight loss. Because Dr. Atkins was so blatantly rejected by the medical community, he had to find another way to get his ideas heard. He turned straight to the public and began to appeal more the people in a more direct way. By 1972 he had published his very first book, Dr. Atkins’ Diet Revolution, which is where his original weight loss plan originated. Years later, he republished his book under the name Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, which had some minor changes to the information, but still had the same basis ideas. He believed that the main factors that cause people to gain weight is their intake of carbs, most especially in sugar, flour, and high fructose corn syrup.
