Leaders, whether they are members of congress, corporate CEO’s, university presidents, school principals, newspaper editors, or governors, contribute to the continuing saga of defining and articulating what is a leader. Becoming a leader is an intentional process of growth that must be lived out exponetially. Leader must have the will to say “yes” and “no’ to an unending series of tests, large and small, each demanding that we take one more step toward a definition of all who we are. Leaders must be ready to define values, and character. For leaders to be durable and strong leaders, the process will not end. It will become a way of life, not only in business, but within our families, our various communities, and the world. Moral leaders are moral individuals who have not only superior personal virtues such as unselfishness and self-discipline, but also extraordinary examples and behaviors of supporting and encouraging moral behavior of the followers (Gu et.al., 2015). Serving as a role model, a critical facet of moral leadership (Westwood, 1997) implies a process by which subordinates mold their perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors according to what the leader displays. Furthermore, leaders serving as role models lead to follower identification (Kark et al. 2003; Pratt 1998). Leaders are expected to be beacons of morality (Bass, 2008). Aristotle believed leaders should be virtuous and demonstrate strong moral character (Aristotle, 2011; Solomon, 1992). Leaders
Leadership is the most essential aspect of a successful operation; without a leader there is no concise direction or defined power in charge. A leader’s intangibles and instincts must be sharp, knowing that everything hinges on their ability to place their people in the best possible situations to thrive. For as long as humanity has existed, man has always had a leader; both good and bad leaders, qualified or unqualified. People are divided on the concept of what a leader is. Are leaders naturally born? What makes up a leader? How do we determine a leader?
Leadership is, and always has been, a vital aspect of social and economic constructs. It is essential to the survival of societies, industries, organizations, and virtually any group of individuals that come together for a common purpose. However, leadership is difficult to define in a single, definitive sense. As such, theories of leadership, what constitutes a great leader, and how leaders are made have evolved constantly throughout history, and still continue to change today in hopes of improving upon our understanding of leadership, its importance, and how it can be most effective in modern organizational cultures.

From George Washington’s command to victory during the revolutionary war to the triumph of Martin Luther King Jr.’s nonviolent equal rights movement, there have been leadership qualities that have been evident throughout history. Society depends on the abilities of leaders in order to progress in the right direction and finish a specific task. There are many forms of leaders in which different skills are required. Each person has a different view of what a leader and leadership is, however, everyone is influenced by the leader they choose. An efficient leader is someone others turn to for guidance, direction, and inspiration in order to complete a goal. One who possesses leadership qualities is able to influence and persuade individuals in order to attain a desired end. Everyone has the power to be a leader and make a difference in their community. The leaders on Long Island are an important aspect of society because they influence the futures of teens and help them to discover their abilities.

Everyone wants to be a great leader, but not everyone understands what it takes to become one. Vince Lombardi, an American football player and coach once said, “Leaders aren't born, they are made. And they are made just like anything else, through hard work. And that's the price we'll have to pay to achieve that goal, or any goal” (“Forbes Welcome”). Essentially, becoming a leader is something that starts within a person; it takes large amount of determination and motivation. Throughout my life, I have learned how to become a leader both in school, in sports, and in my community.
A leader needs to “believe” in oneself and have the confidence that whatever you say will excite and what you do can motivate others. You must be optimistic about what you do, do have some relevance for being in existence. Believe it or not, “leadership begins with you”.
We have learned in class and have discussed on several occasions what it means to be a leader. There are many leaders that we come across throughout our lives, whether they be in school, job, families, or within our community. Leaders are found in all places and they all have different personalities according to where they have come from and there background. Leaders are those people who are able to lead a group with their ability to find solutions to problems. They are able to notify the groups’ strengths and weaknesses and use them to move forward with achieving what needs to be done. Some people though, may be leaders but they do not have the qualities that it takes to be a leader. They may call themselves leaders but they do not have the capability or the ability to lead a group in the way that they need to be led. These terrible leaders can sometimes be with you in your jobs or others environments. Also there are some people that may be leaders in others agencies but we can see how their qualities do not fit to become a leader and it may be bringing the agency or employees down.
A leader needs to know about the human nature, and be able to direct people towards goals, as well as reducing the group 's doubts about succeeding. Some people believe that a leader is born that way and there is no way, practicing or studying, to create a leader. However, I believe inside of each one of us there is a leader waiting to be awakened and holding on to an opportunity to come out. There are several qualities to be a successful leader I learned from the readings and class lectures.
If you could in your own words define a leader what would you say a leader was? A leader could be considered many different things depending on who you ask. According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary a leader is a person or thing who leads. That’s a pretty broad definition. Sanjiv Kumar defines leadership as the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals (Kumar, 2014). BusinessDictionary.com defines a leader as a person or thing that holds a dominant or superior position within its field, and is able to exercise a high degree of control or influence over others. Leaders can be found in every setting. Examples of leaders include parents, teachers, religious leaders, managers, or even a band director.
For decade’s individuals, companies, and organizations have spent an unprecedented amount of money on researching, molding, modeling and working to define what a leader is and what characteristics make successful leaders. Despite all the research, there is not a quick answer or even full agreement as to what makes an individual an effective leader. The definition of a leader is “someone who can influence others and who has managerial authority.” (Robbins, Decenzo, Coulter, 2015. P.370)
