Could you imagine a life without mathematics? Although many would say that it would be a dream come true life as we know it would not have been the same. Without mathematics our society would have not evolved as much with technology and many other discoveries as we have today. Mathematics is a theory that developed overtime and that it has been made from many contributors who have discover many different types of branches that go under mathematics. For example, some of the concepts in mathematics are algebra, calculus, geometry, trigonometry as well as many others. According to the dictionary “Merriam Webster” the definition of Mathematics is the “science of numbers and their operations interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations.” Society has created mathematics the building block for everything in our daily activities. Math is involved from little to the food that we consume to the way we communicate with one another. Math is very important despite that many believe that their daily activities do not require any of the formulas or equations thought to them, they are completely wrong. Since math has been around for thousands of years now there is no evidence of who was the first person who use it or who discovered mathematics. Mathematics is a logical and precise subject. Without precision in math everything is imprecise. A modest inaccuracy can produce a catastrophe. For example, if a doctor fails to calculate the correct amount of medicine to give a patient, it could result in a serious complication, such as death. A further example is the logic and precision it takes to construct a building. If there is one minor miscalculation the whole building could collapse, causing mass destruction.
One way to understand Mathematics is to look at language; mathematics is a language in itself and in some cases it can help you understand another culture, without having to live in that culture.
Heinous...inhuman...primitive- these words define the symbol of the beast in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. An example would be, when Simon attempts to report that the beast isn’t real, the other boys envision Simon as a beast, soon leading them to devour him alive. Looking up the definition of mathematics you will get the simple definition, “the abstract science of number, quantity, and space”. I believe the definition of mathematics to be more than this. I believe mathematics is study of science using basic rules or truths, such as truth 1 + 1 = 2, applying these rules in different ways, since 1 + 1 = 2, we can expand on that and say 1 x 2 = 2, and then extrapolating upon those rules. We then can use these rules to apply and make models to represent the world we live in. Some of these models are used in engineering and physics where using these rules of mathematics to then design structures such as bridges, sky-scrapers, and roads.
Mathematics is a concept that can be defined as “the systematic treatment of magnitude, relationships between figures and forms, and relations between quantities expressed symbolically” (“The Definition of Language”). As a whole, it is a form of communication. The dictionary definition of language is “a body of words and the systems for their use common to a people who are of the same community or nation, the same geographical area, or the same cultural tradition” (“The Definition of Math”). It is clear that both areas of knowledge require a verbal communication used to connect with other people. Presumably, both mathematics and language need each other to be fully understood. Maths is a subject that has always interested me, but looking at the roots of it is an aspect that I have never explored. I always knew that it is very open to debate, with various different opinions but I have always been intrigued by it, so I have decided to use it as the subject of my Extended Project.
