In this book the antagonist was the main character Ishmael Beah. He wasn't always a bad character but through the suffering he went through during the war he changed. He was brainwashed from a harmless victim to a physiologically messed up tyrant. Ishmael would shoot to kill, bomb and burn villages, and slaughtered innocents. He did this to attempt to claim revenge upon the rebels who are responsible for the deaths of his family, friends, and the rest of his village. Once he was taken into custody by the rehabilitation center for child war veterans he and a kid he met at the center by the name of Mambu started a fight between the rebel and army children. The army kids killed four rebels and wounded several others using bayonets

I think Ishmael refused the "jug of water" from Gasemu because he was angry that he couldn't go see his family right now and that they had to wait to rest. On page 93 Ishmael says, “I became angry that we had to rest, and I sat on a big rock away from the group”. He also said, “Part of me was on the way to the village, the other impatiently waited on the hill”. He was anxious to see them because it had been a long time since he last saw them and has been thinking about them everyday. These two quotes showed how he was angry and anxious about finding out that his family was still alive, but couldn’t see them right away. Ishmael started his journey with Junior, Mohamed, Talloi, Gibrilla, Kaloko, and Khalilou. Ishmael got split from them whenever
