Theme Essay: Hope Martin Luther King Junior once said “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope” (“Martin” Brainy). This quote connects to the book A Long Way Gone, which is a true story that involves the life of Ishmael Beah. Ishmael was living a happy life in Sierra Leone, at least until the civil war broke out. Then, like other civilians, he was forced to run for his life, becoming separated from his family and later losing them to the rebels. He later found a way to be rehabilitated and regain his childhood. He once again learned how to love, which he does by having hope. Hope is a major theme throughout the novel. Ishmael expressed hope when he held on to old memories from his former life, when he was found by UNICEF and was taken to a rehabilitation center for help, and when he spoke at the UN in New York. On the run from the RUF, Ishmael Beah was able to comfort himself with memories of his earlier life. For example, in chapter 8 Ishmael found himself all alone and had no idea where he was headed. He walked for two days straight and “felt as if somebody was after me” (Beah 49). On the fourth day, Ishmael thought about when Junior and himself had visited Kabati and took walks with his grandmother on paths around the coffee farms by the village.
