The board at Girls Inc. of Monroe County is composed of lawyers, consultants, financial advisors, marketing directors, and lawyers. The skillsets are directly linked with operating an efficient and effective organization. No longer is Girls Inc. of Monroe County’s board just composed of passionate volunteers or donors. Today’s board is filled with individuals who not only share that passion, but have the appropriate skillsets needed to achieve/create an effective strategy. As discussed in class, the roles of the board and staff at most non-profit organizations are intertwined (Coble, 2017), however at Girls Inc. of Monroe County, the board is tasked with strategic and mission development, not day-to-day tasks (“Governance,” 2017). Therefore, I see less of an overlap, which suggests that they are moving towards a more contemporary
In higher education, institution carry themselves differently depending on the mission and if they are for-profit. The difference between for-profit and nonprofit is that for-profit institutions tend to be concerned with making a profit even though it might not be for the best interests of their students, nonprofit institutions are legally bound to put their profit back into the institution. Some in the for-profit sector have been shifting from being for-profit to nonprofit. Some institutions are either buying out the for-profit institutions or converting to nonprofit.
The boards of directors include Edward S. Lampert, Louis J. D’Ambrosio, William C. Kunkler III, Steven T. Mnuchin, Ann, N. Reese, Emily Scott, and Thomas J. Tisch (About, n.d.).
The Board of Directors plays an essential role in certain types of managed care companies. They assess the overall direction and strategy of any organization. A typical board can lower an organization’s risk profile by operating in a way that reduces its own liability and remains consistent with good governance. Also, the board members must try to avoid conflicts and must remain indulgent by performing their duties towards the benefit of the plan within the confines of the bylaws (Kongstvedt, 2013). According to the Nonprofit Risk Management Center (NRMC), “a board’s role in risk management reflects its commitment to the proper and successful operation of the nonprofit organization” (n.d.). Basically, the board’s responsibility begins with
Having experience working with federal U.S. policy on Capitol Hill and an interest in promoting rights for women and girls on an international level, I wanted to learn more about how organizations are advocating for U.S. policies in this area. This led me to the International Center on Research for Women (ICRW), which is a non-profit research organization that evaluates development programs focused on women and girls and conducts research on effective strategies to advance gender equality throughout the world.

Due to the fact the president of the Loquium Institute is out of town until Friday, the first act as development director is setting up a meeting with Charles Davenport, the President of the Board of Trustees and Julia Smithe a board member and the only acting member of the development committee. Davenport and Smithe are the only members of the Board of Trustees who are actively engaged in the Loquium Institute and its mission. Since they are active in the involvement of the organization and fundraising they will have information regarding how the organization operates and perhaps ideas on how to best move forward with engaging the other board members to participate more in the organization. Temple et. al. (2011) states that it is important to have an “involved and committed governing board, prepared to make personally significant commitments of time and fund” (pg. 82). It is vital to having the entire board actively engaged in order to move forward with the capital campaign the president wants to initiate.
