While researching I found that Psychiatric nursing encompasses a fully holistic care model. A Psychiatric mental health (PMH) nurse must assess and integrate a patient’s medical, physical, social, cultural, socioeconomic, etc. considerations with his /her mental health concerns. Psychiatric nursing is equal parts knowledge, compassion, and intuition leveraged by experience. Psychiatric nurses deliver care with a planned emphasis on addressing the very areas of health and the mind that other nursing and medical disciplines view as an afterthought or footnote to the priority of physical/biological care. Psychiatric nurses, by helping a client to improve and positively progress in their mental health, can impact that client’s ability to maintain healthy lifestyles, medical regimens, employability, community integration and productivity. Psychiatric nurses are essential to the real-time enhancement of their client’s quality of life.

The ambition to study for a degree in Mental Health Nursing has developed from my teenage years, as well as my experience of working in the health care profession. For approximately four years, I have worked in a Forensic Mental Hospital for individuals with criminal convictions who are too mentally unwell to be in prison. My time in my current work place has given me distinct insight into the variety of mental health problems individuals can suffer from, and has become one of the main inspirations behind my career choice. This experience has given me a deep understanding of the challenges mental health nurse's face, but also a great awareness of the satisfaction and achievement to be found in being able to help patients live a more normal life, to achieve some stability in their daily existence and to maintain their dignity as human beings. I am aware that in the mental health degree course there is a lot of clinical practice, which I feel I have gained experience for during my employment. The variety in the job is very appealing to me, and the prospect of developing more skills to help those who are seriously troubled is very rewarding.

I have chosen to critique Rydon’s (2005) article ‘The attitudes, knowledge and skills needed in mental health nurses: The perspective of users of mental health services’ because I am interested in finding out service user’s outlook of mental health nurses. When I qualify as a mental health nurse I would need to acquire the correct attitudes, knowledge and skills as this would make the nursing process more effective, because as McCabe and Timmons (2006) suggest I will be more sensitive to the client’s needs and preferences. This research will explore the perspectives of psychiatric nurses from different facilities regarding their reason in choosing mental health nursing and remaining as mental health nurse (MHN). Findings will be used as a reference for the retention and recruitment of mental health nursing.

Wounds could be healed in a week through the use of medical and surgical interventions, but mental illnesses are almost always chronic and require a lot of health management. Instead of giving suggestions and trying to stabilize the client with medical or surgical techniques, mental health nursing requires more cooperation between nurses and clients.
