“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth”. The sentiment expressed here by the great Muhammad Ali is one that certainly resonates with me. I have been given a chance at life, and because I am so fortunate to have been granted this unbelievable opportunity, I feel it is my duty to help others well I am here. Throughout my life and academic career, I have continually provided service to the community in various different ways. My first such experience came during my time in elementary school when, each year, myself, and many of my classmates, would engage in a day of service on Martin Luther King Day. We made peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a local food cupboard, played bingo and did arts and crafts with elderly residents in a retirement community, and even played music for nursing home residents. These early year activities introduced me to the idea of giving back and helping those in need and since that point, I have continued to prove my dedication to serving the community. For several years, I dedicated my service to helping at a golf camp I had previously attended when I was younger. At the camp, I helped run the practice sessions and went out on the course with the campers. I was able to provide some tips and encouragement to the kids, and really enjoyed beginning to instill a love for golf just as the camp had done for me. During my high school years, I used the education I had been given to tutor peer students in a variety of subjects in a program called STARTS. This program focused on helping struggling students turn around their academics.. Also during these years, I spent a week of my summer volunteering at a youth soccer camp for underprivileged children in a Latino community not far from where I live. Many of these children had very little, so to be able to come to this soccer camp and to spend a day having fun and being taken care of, was a big deal for them. Seeing their happy faces was extremely rewarding for me, and the whole experience opened my eyes and gave me greater perspective. My proudest community service achievement, however, is something that touches very close to my heart. Having been a type 1 diabetic for the past four plus years, helping those
I have many experiences with community service since I am very passionate about helping people and the less unfortunate. I have volunteered in many activities to help my community, for example, Eagle Scream Fest, Dia del Nino, Closet to Closet, Multicultural night and the best one Food for Families. Food for Families is a non-profit organization that distributes free food twice a month. I have been involved with this organization since the beginning which has been two years. I love volunteering with the organization because I am able to see the difference that is making to
As surprising as it may sound, I have been doing community service since the sixth grade and it is a new experience each time. It all began with a community clean up known as 'Keep McAllen Beautiful' as we got there everyone seemed excited to be there. It was beautiful to see such unity inside of my community, and I decided from then on that I would like continue helping out where it is needed. As I joined the National Honor Society my chances of providing my services increased, and I decided that I would assume a position of leadership when needed. I became the society's president, which allowed me to develop my time management skills, creativity, and efficiency. I organized an fundraiser for the hurricane Harvey disaster victims where all
I volunteered at the Gonzales City volleyball clinic where I assisted the head coach by helping the young volleyball players learn how to set, serve, hit, and bump. I did this three times a week for three hours each day. The clinic consisted of children from ages 7-14 and each age group went in at different times. Also, I did community service at my local St. Theodore Church by helping in the jumping house at the church carnival. For the past four seasons I helped fundraise at the high school football games by selling food at the stadium snack bar. In every home football game I would stay for more than half of the game in the snack
My effort to serve my community have been an immensely important area that I always try to expand on. From my hundred and seventy service hours, I have learned that giving back even in small amounts positively affects the lives of the people involved. My favorite memories of serving my local area is during the special NJROTC ceremonies when I am able to see the wonderful faces of veterans and military families when we present the colors or the veteran with a flag. Through school, I have been able to see the faces of incoming freshmen in my workroom mature into the present sophomores and the students today. In my church, I am apart of the Ushering team which assists with the service every few weeks. Through this, I am able to see the bright
While volunteering at Discovery Challenger I have exclusively worked with a blind man named Geno. My service to the Discovery Challenger Program has positively affected the community in that the athletes that required a helper were able to have me as one despite the limited number of volunteers who helped the athletes. Another community service I committed myself to while in high school was the club Life is Delicious. Life is Delicious is a club that between two and three times Year members of the club cook a warm meal at the high school, and then some go to the St. Vincent DePaul Homeless Shelter in Waterbury. At the end of my sophomore year I was named Co-President of the club. As a member of the club I went to all of the cooking and serving activities and was able to help the homeless of Waterbury by giving them a warm meal. The most impactful service I performed in my opinion was during my junior year when I was the organizer for the Penguin Plunge. During my junior year I thought that it would be a good idea for the basketball team to do the Penguin Plunge in order to raise money for Special Olympics Connecticut as I had done so in the previous two years. So, I approached the athletic director
At a young age I discovered a passion for helping others and I have continued to be passionate about serving my community since then. At the age of eight years old I began the first year of what would soon be my ten year membership of 4-H. Through that program and my church’s youth group I truly began to understand what selfless service was all about. I first began helping others by walking dogs at the local shelter and helping my 4-H club clean the sides of the highways. I later was able to experience several mission trips that opened my eyes to the larger aspect of service. My love for helping people continued to grow as I got older and I continued to find ways to make a difference. One of my favorite experiences was getting to help cook and serve a meal at a homeless
Assisted young children between the grades of preschool to 8th grade in their education. I decided to volunteer because the children of today will be the children of the future and the more smart and educated they are the better they will be in the future. Another reason I helped was because it is hard for young children to adapt to the lifestyle of constantly moving from one place to another. Since their parents are migrants it can have a negative impact on them and their education. I remember one little girl is from Florida but every summer her parents move up to Michigan to work in the fields, but once the harvest is over they move back to Florida. She was behind in school and with the help of teachers and myself we motivated and helped her out so she was able to catch up. I really enjoyed volunteering the past two summers ago at the summer migrant program. If I had another opportunity to help I
I feel that after all of the sacrifices that have been made by the community for my benefit, I have an obligation to give back and re-pay what has been given and more, I have an immense amount of appreciation and gratitude toward my community and all they have done for my peers and I. Community service also plays a big role in my involvement in the youth group at First Baptist Church of Bryson City. each year, a group of teenagers, including myself, participate in multiple community service projects -- whether they are as close to home as the Hospital Hill Road clean-up, or a far away as mission work in Port-au-Prince, haiti. I have been involved in many community service projects, because giving back to my community is something that simply gets done without
I mainly did these volunteer service hours during my time in high school and some others in grade school that I can’t quite remember. For my first three years in high school each student had to get a certain amount of service hours. For all three years I chose Merrimac Park for the location I would choose. It was close to me and I went there often. My first year I simply walked around the park and picked up all the trash I spotted. The second year I did this but then I also asked if they would let me help in the park house as well. They said yes so whenever I came I would sweep the floors of both the hallways and the gym. The third year I was once again looking to do a little more so I offered my services as a score board operator for the youth flag football league I had once been a part of at the park. I knew the person in charge of the athletic programs at the park so he agreed. I was even allowed to ref a few games because I know the basic rules having been in the league and also playing football myself in high school. I think that year was my favorite out of the three. I loved cleaning the park but adding on the role to help out the flag football league was a blast. It was something that at the time I was passionate about and had a close tie with. To be able to help was truly an honor and made me glad I was able to volunteer my time at the
At BC I was blessed with a coach that belonged to a church that needed help setting up prior to the services on Sunday. To help out with this work he would take a group of players each month to set up. This allowed me to grow with my teammates, but also to meet new people. Also during my freshman year I was able to help the community in a way I never had before. I was told about helping at the concession stand at the local Bridgewater baseball fields. I knew this was beneficial because it would give the parents a chance to watch their kids without worrying about the concession stand. I was also able to meet new people and see the community that I was new too.
I have volunteered our local chart choose around my neighborhood that have partnered up with the Houston food Bank . Once a month on a Saturday the Houston food Bank sends a truck full of food and the church distributes the food to people in need around the neighborhood. I along with others would work behind the scenes and package all the food into a box and prepare for it to be distributed. Volunteering for this cause was super fulfilling. Regardless the hot weather I would wear again I knew that it was going to such a good cause. Just imagining a family who would otherwise struggle to have a meal to eat would now have a whole feast f have a whole feast ready on their table for their families.
One of the experiences that touched me the most was going to a humble community on Children’s Day. When we got to the place, I gave to a little boy, his present, he smiled, hugged me and told me: “Come back next year please, I feel that I love you right now”. And since that moment I created one of my biggest dreams, being a philanthropist to teach humble communities how to eat with their own sources of food around the world.
One act of service that really changed my outlook on life was making blankets for Project Harmony. Project Harmony is on organization located in Omaha that tries to protect and support children who have been abused. They are equipped with a large range of staff from medical to forensics in pursue of help every child no longer be a victim and seek the help that they need. Every year around late fall, early winter my summer softball club team and I spend two weekends making as many fleece blankets as we can for those at Project Harmony. I say it really changed my outlook on life I remember thinking before we even started making the blankets how long it was going to take and that I had better things that I could have been doing. So already off the bat I went into a situation with a negative mindset.
I am grateful for all of these experiences as they have taught me a lot and I enjoyed them all. The most important volunteer work that I have done so far has been tutoring and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Since my freshman year in high school I have been tutoring middle school students that are struggling with school and sometimes life in general. This experience allowed me to make many great relationships with these students while helping them learn and grow as people.
The community service that had impacted me the most was my experience volunteering at the DuBois Nursing Home. Though my time was there was limited , I learned a lot and experienced a different side of life I hadn't really been exposed to before. The nursing home taught me to be patient and empathetic. My duties consisted of safely transporting the residents from their rooms to various places throughout the nursing home. I learned their names even though most of them would not remember mine when I would see them later the same day. Many of the residents were pleasant and would talk to me throughout the day however, some of the other residents were not as personable. The disagreeable residents were generally ill-mannered due to their physical
