Picture a parent playing basketball at a park with a child, the child acknowledges the parent’s authority on rules of the game. The child begins to challenge this parent role. The interaction between the two has heated up. How do define this counter, what is this in a sociological perspective? Process and micro interactions defines our roles in society. For Example, “The very organization of the self-conscious community is dependent upon individuals taking the attitude of the other individuals.” (Mead year:739). Mead is referring to when we are working, playing, conversing etc. We are doing a scene. We do everyday life as a play. And through interactions people differentiate roles. Even an object is a symbol within a scene and its role can …show more content…
That is when we departed and went chasing after our children in a rush wondering where they were going in a rush. In dissecting this scene further lets breakdown the act. the ominous look of the parent when I told him my son age was the look of disbelief. I read his body language without him even speaking knowing he did not believe me, my son looked older than what he is. This interaction is vital between to people because it symbolizes how the rest of the scene will go. His role as father was to protect his son from harm making sure my son was age appropriate. He thought he was too old to play with his son. My eye roll was the sign I didn’t believe him but he ignored it. That left a cue for me to diffuse the situation between us so the scene can be accomplished accordingly, to stay polite I smiled for his gain in trust. He seen me as a young father and was trying to make sure I was a responsible father in monitoring my son. He had to play his scene the best he could and decipher my interaction through our contact. Our children are the reason for our contact kind of gauges if we parent converse for long. Such as when the children split we did as well. Our children are the shared factors that we are parents at the park with our children, If I did not have a son and randomly talk to him the scene would have played out differently with the parent questioning why is this man at a children
Ethnography is the systematic study of people and cultures, it is designed to explore cultural phenomena where the researcher observes society from the point of view of the subject of the study. It is the best qualitative method for collecting data often used in the social and behavioral sciences. Data are collected through observations and interviews, which are then used to draw conclusions about how societies and individuals function
Being six foot four means I get a lot of stares and attention when I walk down the street. Most people will look at me in astonishment and say things like “wow you’re tall!” or “how tall are you?” when they see me. But the question I get asked the most from random strangers is “Do you play basketball?” Depending on what kind of mood I’m in, I answer in one of two ways. In both ways I tell the person asking “no,” but my attitude while doing so differs. Most of the time I find this question rather annoying. Just because I’m tall doesn’t mean that I play basketball, nor have I ever. It’s a question that I’ve gotten practically my whole life, but anymore I tend to spend more time thinking about the bigger picture behind it.
The last sociological perspective and the most challenging to recognize is symbolic interaction. Symbolic interaction focuses on how human beings interpret symbols and communicate and forge a sense of self ( Halperin, 2/13/15). Symbolic interaction has five/six questions that need to be answered “What communication is taking place? What symbols are being used &/or how is the communication taking place? How does the communication shape perception? How are the parties being influenced by their interaction with one another? What social roles are being played out? (Halperin. 2/13/15).
Basketball was a new experience to me a few years ago, but i never realized I was going to love it. When I was younger, I’ve always wanted to play the sport of basketball, and I got my opportunity to play when I was in fifth grade at Monte Vista Elementary.
Basketball was my favorite sport growing up. I’ve played since I was little and I still play the game today. I played basketball at my elementary school, St. Cecilia, from Kindergarten till 8th Grade and also played AAU basketball for about 2 years before entering High School. Going into my freshmen year of High School, the first sport I played was basketball. Tryouts began in about the start of November and ended about 2 weeks after. I had made the Freshmen A team. I was excited and as the season progressed, we didn’t win many games but I still had fun playing. Nearing the end of the season, golf was another sport coming up that I also wanted to try and play. I say “try and play” because at the time, I was also going to play AAU basketball. I had set in my mind that I was going to play basketball for all of my four years of high school, but my parents pushed me to tryout for golf. When the basketball season ended, golf tryouts started. Tryouts lasted for about 2 weeks, and I made the JV team. When I found out I made the team, I was very surprised. I hadn’t put in the hard work as others before tryouts came around, but the coach saw potential in me and that I can become a great player. The coach saw so much potential in me, that every week, I kept progressing in skill and fine tuning my mechanics. Halfway through the season, about 4 or 5 weeks after I made the team, my coach gave me the chance to play with the Varsity Golf team for a couple days. I was excited and eager to
In sociology, there are 3 paradigms. There is the conflict theory perspective, the symbolic-interaction perspective and the structural-functionalist perspective. From a conflict paradigm point of view, the essay would focus on gender and how the assumption that girls lack the same level of strength and stamina as men. The WNBA (Women National Basketball League) doesn’t get the same amount of respect as the males do in the NBA (National Basketball League). Another issue could be that the NBA players have a higher annual salary than an average teacher. A structural-functionalist approach could be focused on how it creates jobs (the NBA) and academically too. Basketball could also be focused on how
There are over 5,000 different types of sports. Basketball, a popular and world renowned athletic is a subculture Paul cuffee student Ramses cruz is part of. Especially now when the season is just beginning and being part of the Junior Varsity team is his main focus.
To achieve a goal a team has to work together. I was mad when Liam had to move away from Carter, his best friend, and cousin. I was sad when I moved out my old house that my parents brought me home to when I was born. This has changed me because I used to be jealous of people when they had something I wanted but I have changed. One of many ways this changed me is that I have learned to never give up.
There's also a bit of a role reversal here too because the son is taking care of the mother and he has sort of assumed the parental role while she has a more childish and playful sensibility of the situation. For example, he has to push her to take her pills and also she is the one joking more while he is a bit more serious. When she seriously does discuss him meeting new people though, he says "What new people?" I thought that was telling of exactly how he views life after his mom is gone. Perhaps, he can't even see it because he is still latching onto some hope. The question and the semi snarky way he asks it shows that he doesn't think beyond their life together and that he isn't interested in expanding the people in his life at that moment. He's only focused on her and caring for her. It's all he can bring himself to think about because he's not ready to say goodbye.
The year is 2004, all the Portland boys are playing street ball at the park. All the kids are anywhere between 16 to 35. Damian, built like a tank, is 14 and about 5’8”. The competition in the neighborhood is uncomparable. Even at 14, Damian is easily the best player out of the group. The reason he is so good, is because of his work ethic. Damian spends every possible second at the park or in the gym. Damian is a hard worker, coach-able, and compassionate, and humble.
In order for a parent training session to be successful, there are many essential elements that should be considered. Skill building should be a focus as should the realization of the importance of parents as members of the ABA team. It is essential for their voice to be heard, as they know their child best and are crucial if the right decisions are to be made. Many parents are actively involved finding appropriate services for their child, or seeking out training to implement at home, after all they have a vested interest. There are two types of training formats: the individual and group.
What is the social role of sport? To what extent does social structure influence the practice and experience of sport? Discuss in relation to two of the following: gender, class, ethnicity or Aboriginality, or region. Illustrate your answer with at least three examples from sporting contexts (local or international).
Regardless of the result, the successful implementation of a training drill during a game boosts self-esteem. Coaches, families and teammates can also boost a child’s self-esteem by cheering and encouraging a child’s skill development. These coping skills transpose into lifetime benefits such as reduced levels of anxiety, a more positive view on life, fewer social problems hence less chance of giving in to social pressure, a better body image and being less likely to engage in risky behaviors such as drug use.
Within Hollywood’s movies depiction of drug addiction, many have failed to represent all true aspects that come along with such lifestyles. The movie, The Basketball Diaries, is based off a novel Jim Carroll wrote from his own diary entries. As a teenager growing up in the sixties, Carroll reveals his progression of drug abuse which eventually leads him addicted to heroin.Heroin is a white powder derived from morphine found in opium. It is commonly prescribed as a painkiller, but is also a popular street drug. The director casted Leonardo DiCaprio as Jimmy, and concentrates on creating the character as a stereotypical drug abuser. DiCaprio’s most captivating scene is when he is going through heroin
Symbolic interaction offers a dramaturgical perspective of how people identify and create their social self through social interaction. Many social theorist studies social interaction/ self as a function to our society. In addition, microsociology develop the idea of applying social interaction on a smaller sample size within the society. Therefore, there were an increase in the study of human interaction and the self. Mead develop his idea through symbolic interaction and social psychology of the human mind. Simmel develop his idea through the perspective of symbolic interaction of urban sociology. Both sociologist focus on the inter social aspect of the human life.
