abalones are gastropods class mollusk of the animalia kingdom. abalones are also edible, large, and a type of snail. the most comprehensive treatment of the family considers 56 spices valid with 18 additional sub spices. The shells of the abalones have low open spiral structure and are characterized by several open respiratory pores in a row near the shells outer
Coral reefs support an abundant and diverse population of herbivores, on reefs subject to minimal human disturbance, herbivorous fish such as the scaridae family are predominant herbivores, both in terms of population density and algal biomass consumption. By the consumption of algae, parrotfishes open space for young coral settlement and growth, therefore playing a vital role in the maintenance of coral reefs. This feeding behavior has been observed and past studies have stated that parrotfishes spend ninety percent of their day feeding on algae and in some cases dead corals. This is important as most of the reefs in the Caribbean and across the tropics are being affected by an increase in algae growth which lead to the smothering of coral reefs and sea grass beds. Additionally, after the consumption of some species of
Over time, people are able to develop their personalities and change the way they are towards others and themselves. In “Isabel Fish” by Julie Orringer, Sage is a temperamental teenager who has been unnecessarily mean to his younger sister, Maddy, ever since a car accident that killed his girlfriend. This accident, was a major turning point in his life because Sage had never experienced losing someone he cared about. Even though Sage is initially rude and insensitive towards his younger sister, once he realizes that his guilt from the car accident is affecting the way he treats others, he is able to see how he has been hurting Maddy and tries to earn her forgiveness in order to repair and strengthen their broken relationship.
Some organisms are resistant to ageing and can be classified as biologically immortal. Cells that are not subject to the Hayflick limit (normal number of times cells divide until they stop) are considered biologically immortal. Hydra is a biologically immortal organism because it does not undergo cellular senescence as they regenerate their stem cells and have few different cell types. The American lobster Homarus americanus has large quantities of telomerase in its adult stage unlike most vertebrates which have an absence of this in their adult life; therefore the American lobster has an extended lifespan.
Sea lampreys are an invasive species. They destroy fish populations, so present-day conditions are bleak. Fortunately there are ways to get rid of them.
In Order to analyse the Distribution of C.brunneas and L.scobina, Year twelve Biology classes had to go down to the “ Sirens’ Rock” on the south coast of wellington. The Habitat is mainly rock but there are rock pools from when the high tide went down the water couldn’t get out. Chamapsipho brunnea or Brown Barnacle are a type of barnacle found in the mid-high tides parts of rocky shores. Brown Barnacle are also known as filter feeders so they feed off of algae and plankton. Brown Barnacle are not found in the low tide zones for this reason their shells can close off meaning that they can survive out of water longer by keeping water locked in their shells. Lepsiella Scobina or oyster borer are a predatory sea snail species. they feed off of barnacle and other prey they are found in the mid-high tide zones of rocky shores and not low tide. Oyster borer are frequently hidding in crevices to hide from predators. Oyster borer are not found in high tide but mid-low tides as they can not close their shells off completely
Abalone populations are an economic and recreational resource that is threatened by a variety of factors, which include pollution, disease, loss of habitat, predation, commercial harvesting, sport fishing, and illegal harvesting. As a result of the aforementioned factors, abalone populations have declined considerably, pushing some abalone species to the verge of extinction. To help curb over harvesting and better protect abalone populations, it is important for biologists to efficiently and quickly determine the age composition of a regional abalone population.
The poem “The Fish” by Elizabeth Bishop is written with many devices to help illustrate and develop the story of the fish. These help the reader get a clear picture of the message Bishop is communicating. She uses a consistent structure and rhythm . The story could be any fisherman's story, but Bishop uses similes and imagery to allow the reader to understand the same appreciation she had for the fish.
Zebra Mussels are small fingerlike size about two inches in length. They have a hard white shell with black strips. So that’s where they get their name. The Zebra Mussels originated from the Caspian Sea region of Asia. They are fresh-water mussel species capable to attaching to hard surfaces. The Zeba Mussels can tolerate a wide range of environment conditions. Adults can live out of the water for about seven days.
The Caribbean reef octopus belong to the Molluscs phylum. All octopus are smart, however this species of octopus is the smartest of them all. Their size, depending on the region where they live, can be up to 100 cm, or about 3 feet.
Ichthyosaurs are fish shaped reptiles. These prehistoric creatures ruled over the oceans for 155 million years. Ranging from 245 to 90 million years ago. There are around 80 species known to be make up the group of Ichthyosaurs. These species can be found all over the world because they migrated heavily. The Ichthyosaurs can be compared to a whale, but it isn’t. Ichthyosaurs’ have been found to be two times the size of a person, or as small as a human’s arm length. The creature has a long snout jam-packed with teeth, capable of ripping through prehistoric creatures similar to a squid. Back in the 1800s when the fossils were found its unusual features were noted. A notable feature was its evolution. The fish like creature had evolved from a
Sponges are considered part of the Animal Kingdom because sponges are multicellular. They are known be diploblastic, which means having two layers of cells. Adult Sponges, may have several cell layers, but originally, they all arise from the two layers that were present in the early embryo (Dawkins 2004). Most sponges are asymmetrical, however some of them show the radial symmetry (Dawkins 2004). Sponges do not have a coelom. A coelom is a cavity within the body in which the heart, intestines, kidney, lungs, etc., they are located, and it is sealed off from the outside world. The body cavity of sponges is large, and it is open to the outside world, also it’s enables the sponge to consume food (Dawkins 2004).
From inspecting the crayfish I believe that it's more complex than what I guessed it was. Based on the organs and the way their organ system runs.
The white abalone is an invertebrate in the phylum Mollusca and the class Gastropoda. It is a member of the family Haliotidae and its scientific name is Haliotis sorenseni ("White Abalone - Haliotis sorenseni"). Abalone are large sea snails prized for their beautiful iridescent shells and have been sought out as food and jewelry since pre-colonial times. Though abalone have existed since the Precambrian era, the earliest harvesters of abalone were Native Americans who lived along the intertidal zone in California. Shell pieces found in Indian middens, or old waste piles, along the coast of California show that it was a common food item for hundreds of years. However, the Natives likely had a minimal impact on the population of abalone. In the
When people hear the word corals, they probably think of beautiful, colorful underwater cities; however, corals, also known as Anthozoans, have many beneficial factors to people, diseases, and other creatures. Corals have been used in the treatment for diseases. They have been known to help cure inflammatory disorders. Corals have also have helped in environmental services. They attract tourist which then provides money and jobs for people. Corals have an estimated value of 7.6 billion dollars. Anthozoans are protection for organisms underwater, and protection of the coastlines. They provide shelter and defensive mechanisms to the underwater creatures, and reduce wave energy to protect the shore. Known scientifically as Anthozoans, corals have many characteristics that make them worthy of being protected by the scientific community such as developing medical drugs, economic and environmental services, and protection.
The half crabs moved much slower in the minimum light environment. Their movements would be intermittent, and interestingly the half crabs would wander around the centre of the bowl.
