Abuse and neglect comes in all different forms and each one of them are as equally as damaging as the next. Others will agree that abuse and neglect are hard to define in some cases, but there are clues and signs that professionals and nonprofessionals can detect in a child if they just pay attention. Being observant isn’t the only key to saving these children, but also being willing to speak up and tell someone what you know and or saw. In “A Child Called It”, David Pelzer is a young boy who goes through horrendous abuse and neglect who might have been able to endure much less pain if one adult would have spoken up, despite the fear of any consequences. There is a disgusting number of examples of abuse and neglect in this book, but there will be three different experiences that will showcase neglect, psychological abuse, and physical abuse discussed in the rest of this text. The first type of issue to be discussed is the neglect that young David Pelzer endured. According to Tower-Crosson (2008), neglect may not be as traumatic as being beaten or sexually abused but because it is so difficult to detect, it could go on much longer. In “A Child Called It”, David Pelzer is constantly neglected throughout the entire book in some form or another. The two most obvious forms of neglect were the lack of clean clothes, and not being fed by his mother (Pelzer, 1995). Tower-Crosson (2008) says, “Out society holds parents responsible for giving their children adequate food, shelter,
The responses listed within this writing are about the firsthand experiences that are described within the book A Child Called “It” written by Dave Pelzer. Although there is an overabundance of examples of abuse, neglect and maltreatment given in this book, the support listed is narrowed down to give the best samples of why a reader may feel these specific situations occurred. Each segment will be discussed and explained fully so that the reader is able to grasp why each specific reference was selected.
Most of society is confused what child neglect is, there are many myths that gets society to believe that child neglect is only happens in bad or lower class families and that child neglect only consist of physical abuse. The problem with this is that child neglect “is more than bruises and broken bones.” (Smith/Segal ,1) Child neglect is known as a type of child abuse; that fails to

The National Children 's Alliance reported that the number of unique cases of abused and neglected children in the United States stands at an annual rate of 700,000 and rising (as cited in ?U.S. Department of Health & Human Services,? 2016, p. ii). Sadly, this means that more than 1,900 new children become victims of abuse and neglect with each passing day. Neglect was the type of

In our American Society we face multiple problems which plague our nation. Child abuse is a problem that needs to be brought into attention by the population; it can often be overlooked due to the fact that everyone line between discipline and child abuse is different. The International Child Abuse Network (ICAN) uses four basic categories to document the child abuse cases. They are: emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. In the biography is Dave Pelzer titled A Child Called “It” shows examples of the four out of five basic categories of child abuse Dave encountered during his childhood and how he persevered and be quick on his feet in order to survive his ordeal.
After reading the book, “A Child Called It” by Dave Pelzer, I will say this a melancholic book that depicts the true child abuse that Pelzer suffered in the hands of his mother. This book describes his horrifying experiences in child abuse and I would greatly recommend reading it. The book is fabulous and once you start reading it you will not want to put it down. Pelzer touches on the cruel abused faced by his mother and his deep willingness to survive and try to get ahead in life. This book is a step toward understanding the many different types of abuse and how to recognize the various forms of maltreatment. I will state three incidences of abuse from “A Child Called It.,” label each incident of abuse, and
Introduction Dave Pelzer the author of A Child Called “It”, once said, “Childhood should be carefree, playing in the sun; not living a nightmare in the darkness of the soul.” This quote is about abuse and neglect that happen to our country’s children. In the United States alone, between four and seven children a day die due to child abuse and neglect. In our country, every ten seconds a report of child abuse is made to Child Protective Services. The United States is one of the worst industrialized nations when it comes to child abuse and neglect.
This paper discusses several articles, as well as some college texts, that define and illuminate the four main types of child abuse that exist within the United States. It also discusses some of the effects of abuse and attempts to offer some solutions for this very prevalent societal problem. The definitions of child abuse and neglect vary, based on the context in which they have been studied. Some studies suggest that neglect is the most prevalent type of child abuse in this country. Kaplan, Schene, DePanfilis, and Gilmore assert that neglect becomes chronic when its occurrence is not only ongoing, but seriously deprives a child of basic physical, developmental, and/or emotional needs by someone who cares for them. Whatever
Child abuse and neglect is, unfortunately, an ever-present issue in society. Those who strive for a dystopia will always be thwarted by the reality that perfection does not exist and that abuse and neglect will always exist in some form. Fortunately, those who fall to such treatment can often find opportunities to escape. The Cure by Peter Horton portrays this very situation in his moving film. We are confronted by a moody, mischievous young boy named Erik facing abuse from his mother. Erik because of his abuse and neglect experiences changes to make him more calm, caring and mature.
There are many forms of abuse and neglect. One that stands out to me is child abuse. There are several forms of child abuse, some rarer than others. The reasoning behind child abuse is intriguing to me. Why and how can someone abuse a child? Mental health of the abuser plays a big role in how and why people do the things they do. A mental health issue contributing to child abuse is Munchhausen syndrome by proxy. (MSpB) Munchhausen syndrome by proxy symptoms are varied, almost always characterized by a caretaker, usually the mom, creating symptoms in someone they care for. (Gross, 2008)
Child abuse or neglect can start at very young ages. Researchers have studied child neglect, and the long term effects are terrific. Neglect can have long-lasting effects. It can be anything from leaving a child home alone to the more extreme case of malnutrition where the child does not survive. As a human being you have your basic necessities such as: water, vitamins, and protein of some sort. As a child the food you eat and the nutrition you get impact your physical appearance. Not only can malnutrition cause growth problems, it takes a toll on a person emotionally. When a child is being neglected I feel like the parents i s pilfering the child's life away day by day.
I have learned many things about abuse, including neglect. Neglect is classified as abuse because of the damage it causes to the neglected child. For example, being left alone at home can very dangerous, especially for young children. There is also the threat of a child not being treated of illnesses that could prove permanently damaging, or even deadly. Also, if other forms of abuse are happening, a neglected child would be much less likely to speak up about it, preventing that from being stopped as well. Because of this, it is very important to be aware of the signs of neglect, and if you notice something is off, talk to the child, and if neglect is happening, talk to the parents to try and stop it, or if it continues, contact the police.
