Advantage And Disadvantage Of Online Education

Many students have a difficult time choosing between online education and traditional education. Both styles of education offer advantages and disadvantages to the student. There are many things to consider when making this life altering decision, such as, cost, convenience, time, social interaction, and technology. This information is meant to inform prospective students looking to further their education of the pros and cons of both online education and traditional education. Taking the steps to further your education is a big decision and one that should not be taken lightly. One should weigh all of his/her options and be well informed and certain of their choice before taking that leap.

Nowadays, education becomes one of the important things in human life. Most people are aware of the necessity of a higher education. In this present day with the technology there are more options to obtain education. Besides attending traditional schools, people can get an online education. Although there is a similarity between online education and traditional education, the differences between them are more noteworthy.

Online school is better than traditional school because they can work at their own pace, there is easier contact with teachers, and they have a more flexible schedule. I chose to discuss Online Learning vs. Traditional Learning for this final project. Since 1999, the debate on the differences and similarities between traditional and online learning has been ongoing. Notably, this was the time when institutes began to use internet as a way of conveying distant education. Despite the differences that are there, it is worth noting that they are being narrowed down since technology is emerging prevalently. These facts beg the question; how do the two learning formats differ and what can one expect during transition to eLearning? Before seeking answers to this question, it is worth mentioning that I chose this topic because even though I am currently taking online classes, I wanted to research and learn more about the different benefits of online learning. Also, I am interested in researching on the major differences between online learning and traditional learning.

In today’s society, so many people are continuing their education beyond high school. We realize that in order to make a decent living, a degree is most likely a requirement. In some cases even a bachelor’s degree is not enough to qualify for many positions. Nevertheless, thanks to technology, we now have the option to learn online or in a traditional classroom setting. There are very few differences between the two, and students need to understand that as much time and energy will need to be devoted to the online courses as on a campus. “A 2010 meta-analysis and review of online-learning studies concluded that online learning was as good as or slightly more effective than traditional face-to-face instruction” (Mendenhall, 2011).

Traditionally learning was to be in campus, where students would interact with one a another, there were no other ways for learners to get educated beside going to the classroom and listening to the instructor. A few years ago online education was never thinkable, and yet it has become to reality and it is widely expanding with popularity. Online classes can teach students educational responsibility. By forcing them to access the online portal to participate in reading the textbooks/lectures and doing the assignments. Technical abilities is also learned with online classes. Students who lack the tech savvy knowledge can learn how to navigate through the online environment. Due to the increase in online course enrollment, people are questioning if students truly learn something from online classes because it’s not a traditional learning environment. The advancement in technology has introduced a new education program that creates diversity in the learning systems. Today, many institutions of higher learning are or have introduced an online program that allows students all over the world to pursue their academic dreams using their computers. While this is an important innovative idea, most colleges and universities still maintain the traditional classroom setup where students interact with the educator on a face-to-face basis. Apparently, both programs achieve the objective of the education system which is to provide knowledge and skills to the learners. However, the two have multiple differences that make each unique and favored by some students than the other. Therefore, this essay examines the differences and similarities between the on online education and traditional education. The traditional and online educational programs are similar and different in their use of learning materials, teacher instructions, student assessment, and assignments.

However, there are a few issues to be dealt with if web-based learning is fully implemented in educational institutions. Firstly, change in learning theories and approaches may lead to confusion or difficulties among teachers and students (Web-based Learning: Good or Bad?). As discussed earlier, in web-based learning approach, teachers are facilitators and motivators. It is up to the students in carrying out the activities planned by the teachers creatively and constructs their knowledge about the lesson by themselves with guide from the teachers.

Years before when the web was created, online learning was given to help students with learning on a particular subject through correspondence. Most students were more confident when they were taking a traditional class rather then an online class; because of its efficiency. However, recently online learning is on the rise. Online learning is revolutionizing the world with technology that can offer pathways to progress. Earlier studies of online learning have concluded that these technologies were not somewhat different from regular face to face instruction in terms of effectiveness. College students should consider taking online learning as an option to improve their learning because it is as efficient as face-to- face instruction in terms of student outcomes, the online learning step could prove the effective cost choices, and need to provide access to learners in a place where traditional learning is not possible.
