IV. Advantages, disadvantages and effects of the coping mechanism on the person using it
Turning to friends, families and/or loved ones to relieve distress, as depicted by the Japanese tertiary students can be considered as a search for Social Support. Matlin(1990) stated that support from the people around us can possibly give the sense of security, being confident and feeling of being cared for. It was also added that this is effective since it decreases the effects of stress on people, thereby protecting us from the possible complications these can bring to us.
It is advantageous, as the effects tell us. However, a possible disadvantage it can bring is the sense of dependence. One thing that can also bring us to disadvantage is when the people from whom we will be asking for support will be gone, or are not available to help us during the stressful moment. Using spirituality as a coping mechanism brings the sense of calmness, peacefulness and relaxation. When one prays, as done by the African-Americans, he/she usually closes his/her eyes for one moment and find the remaining peace within us before we pry. It is therefore, providing the user the peacefulness and relaxation that he/she needs. In 1994, Huffman

Norman Cousins said, “Laughter is a powerful way to tap positive emotions" (Moss 1). Humor is studied by many researchers in sociology, psychology, art, literature, and medicine. When people wonder whether humor aids in areas other than health, a treasure trove of possible benefits to the learning or educational community is opened up. Humor can be used as a tool to promote learning.Research speaks to the many benefits of humor in healing, to its benefits in the classroom or boardroom, from reducing stress of students or employees, to boosting self-esteem and feelings of camaraderie. Spirituality plays a very important role in African American culture. As we know, traditional healing practices and spirituality are closely related. This deep spirituality comes from their motherland African culture but was reinforce during the rough periods of slavery and enforced discrimination. Spirituality makes people of believing that only God is responsible for health, illness, and healing. Thus, spiritual beliefs provide comfort and are an effective way for remaining healthy, coping, and healing (Johnson, Elbert-Avila, Tulsky, 1992). Giger, Davidhizar, and Turner (1992) recalled that a number of African Americans still linking good health with luck or success and disease or illness with bad luck, fate,
Patient is able to perform activities and reduced reliance on others for meeting own needs.
Religion plays an important role in people’s daily life. It gives them a sense of belonging and brings communities together. After doing research, it is clear that for African Americans religion brings them a great sense of comfort, belonging and brings them together as one; it has played a big role in helping African American’s be where they are today and it continually fights for their freedom and rights.
Spirituality and religion are often seen as significantly positive resources for individuals dealing with hardship and adversity throughout the life course. Spiritual coping is often effective and most often employed when in unfathomable situations or faced with "problems of human insufficiency" (Pargament, 1998). However, spirituality may also be diminished when it becomes associated with demoralization or negativity, such as when one feels abandoned by faith or condemned by the world (Van Hook, 2013) in their current situation or experience. Higher powers and spiritual connection then begin to appear either irrelevant or beyond reach, and viewpoints become fatalistic as individuals resign to the belief that their faith has not helped them.
Treatment outcome predictors of African American culture are that one may attend church services weekly to praise and worship. While attending services one will depend on his or her belief in God and worship in faith with a commitment to themselves and God. Spirituality is a strategy one will use to cope with events or experiences within his or her life that is stressful. These strategies are considered external, support from religious beliefs such as prayer, reading the bible, and the reflections of one’s belief. Spirituality is also seen as an integral to health and a sense of one having the feeling of wholeness or well being (Britt, 2004).
The means of spirituality in African American lives has been a factor post the days of the Middle Passage and the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Sociologist E. Franklin Frazier wrote heavily about the importance of the Negro church in the 1930s and 40s. Spirituality was a factor for African American during the Civil Rights Era, and according to research from literary writers, it plays a distinct role now. Mattis (2000) indicated that spirituality includes a belief in having a personal relationship with God and living according to God’s will. According to Love and Talbot (1999) spirituality involves the pursuit of discovering meaning and purpose in one’s life. Considering the factors discussed throughout the text as preventatives, a sense of spirituality and faith may be a positive alternative. Herndon et al., (2003) conducted a study with 13 Black male students and found that spirituality was critical to the success of participants. Throughout study Herndon et al., noted that “spirituality bolstered their resiliency, provided a sense of purpose, and augmented the support that participants received from religious

In the book “Spirit Healing Native American Magic & Medicine” by Mary Dean Atwood she claims how ritual helps all the negativity get blocked out. “Ritual quiets the mind, making it accessible for spiritual acts, and a quiet mind blocks out negativity and wasted energy. Spiritual songs and prayers give power to the person performing them” (Pg. 114). Spirituality and religion play a significant role in shaping the lives of individuals. Regardless of whether you follow the practices of an organized religion, simply believe in the spiritual life force or claim to not ascribe to religious or spiritual traditions, all of these paths affect the way an individual interacts with the world around them. One of the major influences of religion or spirituality is on one’s ability to cope with difficult situations. Whether it is the death of a loved one or the loss of a job, religion and spirituality can have monumental effects on how the individual responds to stressful or traumatic
This essay discusses coping, a complex process exercised by people to suppress, change, or eliminate stress or threat. The results from the study showed a variety of things. Firstly, perceptions of emotion-focused strategies in one's spouse was inversely related to one's personal distress and adjustment. When the spouse thought that the wife was using emotion-focused coping more often than problem-focused coping, it was found that it was related to the patient's elevated distress and lower functioning. Conversely, when the husbands perceived their spouse as coping with problem-focused strategies it was associated with their own better functioning. Results showed that perceptions of the breast cancer patients of their husband's coping strategy did not have a significant effect on their own distress levels. The results of the study are in line with cognitive theories of stress and coping and show that emotion-focused coping is related to pessimism and low control, whereas problem-focused coping is correlated with optimism and high control (Ben Zur 2001).
Rituals reduce anxiety by providing confidence and a feeling of control. Malinowski argues that religion promotes social solidarity by dealing with situations of emotional stress that threaten
As humans, laughing and joking is something that comes natural. This is something that we have been doing even before we knew how to walk or talk. As we start to grow up, we all develop personality traits and our humor styles follow. Before taking this course, I have never consider identifying what my humor styles are until now. I took the Humor Style Questionnaire (Martin et al. 2003) and calculated that my top humor style is self-enhancing and closely following is affiliative. Throughout this paper I am going to reflect on my top humor styles with personal examples, and how it relates to my mental health, with several methods I can use to make myself healthier and happier. I will also be considering the other two styles and how then do not relate to my humor style and mental health.
