1.1 Introduction and Problem summary: There are two types of internal combustion engines; they are petrol and diesel engines which are used to generate the power in industries and automobile. The global problems faced with these engines are emissions and fuel economy. To solve these problems there needs to be new inventions and new designs of the engine which are environment friendly and economical. Some designers and researchers have been working on new designs, new concepts and new ideas to find better engines which have a high power, are environment friendly and efficient on fuel consumption using alternative fuel. People use diesel engines as the cost of diesel is low as compared to petrol. But the basic and somewhat main disadvantage of this type of engine is that it is expensive, both in manufacturing and maintenance. These types of …show more content…
Many times when the combustion is not proper, we do not get the desired brake power. Due to lower amount of brake power we do not get the desired torque and which in turn reduces the engine power. The other problem which is faced due to the present diesel engines is less homogeneity of fuel. Due to less homogeneity of fuel, there is more unburnt fuel which causes higher emissions or pollution. Also the efficiency of the engine is …show more content…
There are numerous ways by which the homogeneity can be achieved. Using some of these methods in our project, we would try to achieve maximum homogeneity so as to reduce the emissions and get enhanced engine performance by proper combustion in the engine. In this project we would work on increasing the fuel homogeneity by changing the geometrical characteristics of the nozzle of diesel injector. We would do the optimization of nozzle by using various types of nozzles like single point, multi-point , pentaux and pintox
In 2002 a joint project between International Navistar and the Ford Motor Company was born. “The goal of this project was to create an engine that was fuel efficient, emission compliant and would be able to outperform all of the competition” (Banks Power). With over 2 million ford super duty’s equipped with the 7.3l Powerstroke engine on the road, the new engine would have big shoes to fill. The engine that was to replace the outdated, underpowered and overall inadequate 7.3l Powerstroke was the International Navistar 6.0l turbo diesel.
In addition, consumer must be aware that there are better alternatives to hybrids on market. Thanks to advancing technology, many petro powered and diesel powered vehicle get similar EPA fuel economy on highway. From German automotive manufacture, they have developed Clean Diesel such as Blue Tec from Mercedes-Benz and TDI from Volkswagen which
Abstract—In this modern era, many advancements in technology have been witnessed. Research and data collected around the world have allowed for these advancements to take place. This has allowed for a better understanding of the footprint humans leave on the environment. As a result, this has allowed for the planet to become eco-friendlier. An eco-friendly advancement in the 21st century is the electric vehicle. There are a plethora of benefits using electric vehicles. Some advantages include no emissions, cost-effective, and low maintenance.
Many of the environmental problems is caused to use of hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide. Use of electric vehicle helps in the reduction of these pollutants by a significant amount leading to controlled pollution.
Fuel efficiency in automobiles has become a topic of much discussion in recent years in the United States. This is due largely to the environmental devastation that fuel emissions cause, but it is also sparked by the rising fuel costs. Making cars with high fuel efficiency not only saves consumers money, but also will drastically reduce the pollution that is caused by emissions. Today automakers are putting a tremendous amount of effort into making their cars more fuel efficient, both to meet government regulations and to make their car more appealing to the consumer.
Environmental concerns have been raised from time to time because of the dependency on the gasoline-fueled engine as the chief auto powertrain technology. This has resulted in exposing many automobile users to unpredictable prices of fuel. These issues were, however, the reason for
In the article, “ Why the Gasoline Engine Isn’t Going Away Anytime Soon,” Joseph B. White writes about the reality of the old school, yet productive ways how the internal-combustion engine is going to stay in the competitive market. While at the same time he describes the change for the industry is coming just at a gradual slow pace. For years environmentalists and energy saving specialists could not accomplish what high oil prices did in just a couple years. Changing the game of auto makers focus to make improvements to their engines. The idea of changing from oil to electricity is possible but there is few chances of it succeeding until the future. The author states that cars powerful enough to serve more than one function are the basic need
This paper is not intended to condemn hybrid engines, as they can be good engines and a practical means for vehicle manufactures to power their products or meet emissions. This is to present the idea that gasoline hybrid engines are inferior to Diesel engines. I concede that a Diesel hybrid engine would be more beneficial in some applications. Ideally, we need to come up with better road systems and better road surfaces. If the roads are better maintained, we could use harder material tires without sacrificing comfort and thus gaining in fuel economy due to decreased rolling resistance. If the roads were maintained as well as railroads, then we could really get the economy of a locomotive in
In today’s world there are many different engines that gets assembled in vehicles. The main difference in the engines are if they are gas or if they are diesel. While bearing some minor similarities, the differences between gas and diesel are remarkable.
The gas-fired internal combustion engine is perhaps one of the greatest human inventions of the 19th century. Since its invention, the engine has evolved numerous times to become the modern engine of today. As a result of the engine, methods of transportation have evolved, travel time has been reduced, and work and production have
The growing dependence of many countries, especially the USA and Europe on the imported oil and the daily increase of oil price and the heightened concern on the global warming and the environmental pollutions which has forced many car manufacturing companies to study the new and innovative techniques in solving this very important issue.
In today’s motorized life , It’s difficult to live without motor (Engines) and the main source of it’s input power is fossil fuels & partly electric power. In future these fuels or electricity may not be available widely as they are non renewable energies. So, it may be difficult to use engine with the fuels.
The world we live in is surrounded by diesel engines. They are on the freeways, railways, airways, and are one of the leading electricity producers in the world. They are also becoming more popular in automobiles. These engines are efficient and reliable and they are getting very sophisticated. However, the physics behind these engines has not changed.
Engine efficiency is a major issue in the car industry. Instead of completely replacing an engine by a bigger and more powerful
Going green is important in today’s society and many of us look to buy greener products. Part of today’s social responsibility in a company is going green. Volkswagen has improved their facilities and vehicles to be more environmentally friendly in recent years. Volkswagen was first out of the auto makers to apply ISO 14000 series during its drafting stage. The ISO 14000 series linked to Volkswagen’s revolutionary technology and advance capability through resource management (Yang, Colvin, and Wong). Volkswagen is investigating longstanding options for non-fossil fuels and to increase the effectiveness of its current fossil fuel engines (Nunes and Bennett). In the company’s report it cautions that enhanced effectiveness will not be adequate to relieve engine emissions as economic
