Advantages and Disadvantages of Growing Up in a Nuclear Family

The concept of family has changed in many perspectives throughout the years. Nuclear families started back in the 1950s also known as ‘ideal families’. Today family comes in many varieties whether it 's nuclear, accordion, or extended families and even same sex marriage. One thing that is undoubtedly true is that family will always be the one that you have an unbreakable bond with. American families have evolved in many ways leading us away from what was known as nuclear families.

In the reading “A Little Commonwealth”, John Demos writes about the life, norms, and misconceptions of early colonial families. He gets his information mainly through censuses found from that time period. Many people today believe that the colonial family consisted of a large extended family with several generations under the same roof. However, standard colonial families were actually made up of small nuclear families (Demos, 62). Nuclear families contain a married couple and their children. Their modest homes were simply not large enough to house many generations and censuses show that 4 to 6 family households were very common (Demos, 64). This is very similar to families today with households that contain the nuclear family. However, today it is not uncommon to hear about extended families. In fact, it can be quite common.

In extended homes, part of a nuclear home to which other relatives have been added: grandfather, nephew, grandson, mother-in-law, mother, etc. In Mexico, it represents 21.5% of the total families. Mexicans are very conscious of their responsibilities to immediate family members but also the extended family such as cousins and even close friends. Extensive family involvement is important to the nuclear family, especially for the support in day to day life.

Extended family was when one spouse of a new marriage goes to live with the other spouse’s family, opposed to living on their own.

Sometimes your extended family members will always be there for you. Example my family is scattered across the world but if I ever need them they are only one phone call away. My family is a nuclear family. A nuclear family consists of a mother, father and children living in one household. Every nuclear family has advantages and disadvantages in them. The advantages are strength and stability, financial stability, which equals more opportunity, consistency which means lucrative behavior, health benefits, conflict resolution and better communication skills. In my nuclear family, we incorporate these advantages to become a better family and to be brought closer together.

He also found that relatives continue to be the main source of informal support in all social classes. The effects of there being more extended families is that in some areas of the world there is an ageing population, which can also mean that there are more empty nest families, these are families where the children have left home and it is just the elderly parents living in the home. An example of extended families can be found in South Asian families, here the family is vertically extended. In one household there is a man, his sons and grandsons, their wives and any unmarried daughters, this would make a family relatively large. Living like this means that kinship ties a strong and it also causes the younger generations to change their behaviour as the family would be quite ‘old fashioned’, which causes them to stay living with their family and increasing family size in Southern Asia.

My grandparents were the matriarchs of the family.We perceived them at a higher standard than of my parents. Their unannounced titles are automatic because they are elders in our family. But only used their titles or status when they disagreed with my parents. I normalized the fact that my  first cousins lived with us. Though it is not a part of the nuclear family, the advantages seem to be more helpful. In other cultures the more children that are available means there are more hands to help around the house. Mostly everyone would have a job or task to complete. These tasks would make the living conditions easy because everyone contributed. Compared to the typical family,  it may discouraged because it can be seen that the children are used as servants. I I never viewed that the work I contributed in my family was being exploited in anyway. It was just a way of life. Meyerhoff says it perfect in his article “For children, this provides an enlarged number of significant adults and playmates” (Meyerhoff). I truly think it made me independent as I become older.
