Being that, on October 20, 2014 in Chicago where 17 year old African-American Laquan McDonald was shot brutally and excessively by officer Jason Van Dyke the boy was shot sixteen times the first shots where to his back then he collapsed on the floor the officer kept shooting till McDonald hit the concrete and the officer still shot at him. The Chicago community was outraged about the officer shooting the teenager. Even today police brutality is still out there this is a perfect example of police brutality shooting someone with a full magazine of bullets is crazy and for having a Swiss army knife. The officer will be facing chargers for first degree murder.
Police brutality isn’t something new in the United States. It’s just been something that has been covered, payed off and forgotten about for years, until the next event occurs. Police brutality is when the officers who are supposed to be protecting us from danger and harm are the ones causing it in our communities today. Every other day you hear on the news about another ‘black’ man has been killed by police because he was ‘resisting arrest.’ Eric Garner, was killed in Staten Island on July 17, 2014 by police because they suspected that Erica was selling cigarettes. Eric was put into a chokehold for half a second because he was supposedly resisting arrest and was then thrown to the ground and stomped in the face while being handcuffed while continuously saying “I can’t breathe.” There were plenty of videos floating around the internet from people who recorded the arrest. Everything was caught on camera, yet, the arresting officers weren’t charged or put in jail or even lost their jobs. No, they
This case provides the story of the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald (17 years) in Chicago by Police Officer Jason Van Dyke on or about October 21, 2014. McDonald died after having been shot 16 times late on that evening by Van Dyke as he and others responded to a report of a man armed with a knife breaking into vehicles in a truck yard (CQ Research, 2016). McDonald, who had a record of juvenile arrests, allegedly refused the officers’ demands to drop his knife (CQ Research, 2016). After 400 days of the incident, the video from a police vehicle showed that McDonald, who was holding a knife was walking parallel, but away from the officers when he was shot 16 times by Van Dyke (Police Charges, 2015). The public has a right to know as much as possible about the rules governing the police and about investigations into allegations of police misconduct. Transparency holds police accountable and accountability builds trust in Police Department.
17 year old african american boy Trayvon Martin was going into a 7 Eleven to get a snack before he flew back home. He walked out of the store and was being stalked by a strange man who turned out to be a volunteer cop. The cop had then told the station that there was suspicious juvenile. The police said not to pursue but he did anyways. He then shot Trayvon in the chest instantly killing him. This was not the only occasion that a police officer beat up an african american for no reason at all. Police brutality towards african americans in america needs to end. Excessive police brutality towards african americans is an issue/ongoing problem that needs to be addressed because it is unjust. Readers can expect to learn the cause and reason why this happens.
Within the past few years, incidents involving many deaths of unarmed African Americans and police officers have been broadcasted across the media. A large portion of these incidents result in protest and advocation against police brutality. There are a wide range of feelings and viewpoints people care to discuss concerning the topic of police brutality. Usually, when an African American person is killed by the hands of a police officer, people tend to explain how police brutality is the cause and culprit. Some people voice how police brutality is a matter that needs to quickly addressed while others believe it doesn 't even exist and therefore is not a cause for concern. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, police brutality is a
This is why I do not think these Police Brutality cases involve racism. In the past year, there have been 4 notable cases where an african american man or woman was treated with excessive force by police. Sandra Bland, Eric Garner, and Walter Scott. Sandra Bland was a woman who failed to signal a lane change and ended up dead in a jail cell. Eric Garner was a man who refused to follow directions from police, was suffocated, and had a heart attack in an ambulance to a hospital where he died. Walter Scott was a man who fled from a policemen during a pull-over. All of these cases do involve police brutality but do not necessarily involve racism and could have been involved had the victims followed directions.
Honestly, there seems to be an ongoing battle between Black men and Law enforcement. Police Brutality against Black men is at an alarming rate. The history of violence, discrimination, supremacy, and disregard for the law has been morally accepted amongst our Society. Besides that, the seemingly higher number of men being killed by law enforcement could be attributed to poverty-stricken communities, which have higher crime rates, racial bias, and sinful pride! Recent events have become so detrimental that black men try to avoid confrontations and committing crimes altogether in fear of losing their lives.
Imagine you are a mother of a 12 year old kid who you let go to the park by themselves. A few hours later, you get a call or a knock on your door saying your child was killed by a police officer. What was their crime? Minding their own business playing with a toy water gun. That is what happened to Tamir Rice, a 12 year old little boy, who was playing the park by himself. The police were called by a person at the park who thought he was playing with a real gun but the person stated at least two times that there was a chance it could be fake. The video shows the cops driving up on the officer and telling him something and then shooting him. They claimed they thought that Tamir was older than 12 years old. Both officers were
Over time the Chicago Police Department unconstitutionally engaged in a pattern of excessive force on civilian. There department was under a lot of scrutiny over officer involved shooting. The Justice Department, which began its investigation amid public uproar over the 2014 fatal shooting by Chicago police of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald. It found numerous incident of unjustified force. Chicago Police was shooting at vehicles without justification, using tasers on people who posed no threat. They even went as far as using force to retaliate against and punish people.
On Nov 25 ,2015 Laquan McDonald died after being shot 16 times for walking away from a police officer. Too many people saw Laquan as “another black person killed by a cop”. But to officer Jason Van Dyke he believes his client was justified. It took 13 months for the charges but Jason was finally charged with 1st degree murder. On CNN they reported that “ The video shows McDonald running, then later walking down the middle of the street. He was heading towards the police but then he decides to walk away. When he starts to spin around he is brought down by a barrage of bullets”. Laquan was unarmed and wasn’t assaulting anyone during the moment of the shooting, the officer predicted that Laquan was dangerous; armed because of his certain skin color and dress code. Protesters during that week took the streets of chicago and remembered Laquan Mcdonald, the protesters were being peaceful and doing no harm. They even told police officers Happy Thanksgiving to thank each and everyone for their
One of the most common faults, and understandably the most infuriating, as a country to see are stories of police brutalities. With more and more stories surfacing about people “randomly” being beaten in public, there is more and more trust lost in our Law Enforcement. This is also one of the most recent dramas we have had to deal with as a community. Everyone has heard about the Ferguson case and the very murky details surrounding it. The story differs depending on who you ask, but the story is that a white police officer shot an innocent African American male, Mike Brown. He then proceeded to run away and hide behind a car. Raising his hands to show the cop he was innocent, Brown, was then shot several more times and then died. Although the reason he was shot is still unclear there have been many riots and protests to get the truth about this incident. Another incident of police brutality is that of a Houston family who was reportedly beaten outside of their home by constables of
Police brutality is a factual thing and people have been observing ever since, to see if it’s a real problem for society, which it is. There have been lots of shooting happening lately, where the police shoot an unarmed person, for no reason. What if that happened to your loved ones? We haven’t heard the real background as to, why it happens? But as we can see from the research that people have done over the year, that the police targets most of the minority people. For example, when a police over at Florida, decided to shoot an unarmed black teenage man because he was walking at the night with his hoody on. Another similar case, where another black teenage man at Ferguson was shot by the police because he was a black person, walking down the
Anger over Killing by Police Halts shopping in Chicago” in the New York Times on Nov. 27. 2015, is one of the many stories of this past year of police shootings involving black youths without any real reason. this story actually catches my attention because a peaceful protest was seen as such and the chicago police did not try to stop this protest like in so many other cities have. although there may be a slight ray of hope considering this but the doesn't change the fact that a seventeen year old was shot sixteen times, for what? holding a pocket knife? the police officer believed his life was in danger , a black teen with a knife , yes the scariest thing in the world. police officers are supposed to be the protectors of all , not the protectors
Lastly, another issue with the American law enforcement is that police kill due to racial assumptions. If you disagree with this statement then why statistically from “The Guardian- unarmed people killed by police officer- 1st Jan to 31st May 2015- white people is 15% but black people is 31.9%.”. This is ridiculous. These racial assumptions from police officers are horrific. Furthermore, “South Carolina policeman shoots Walter Scott in the back 8 times as he runs away. ” 8 TIMES, as he is running away. Why didn’t the officer call for backup and try to chase him instead. In the video of this it also shows the officer placing his Taser gun next to the victim’s body so the officer can try to cover up himself. The officer had assumed that the victim
A recent situation occurred in Ferguson, Missouri. The police shot and killed an African American male after robbing a local convenient store. The details of to why the police shot the male have been mislead and over exaggerated. The aftermath of the riots and vandalism against the Ferguson police were very harsh. The police officers received multiple death threats and their own lives were at stake. The Washington Post explains the riots and vandalism were the result of citizens not being taken seriously by the police and referred to the Trayvon Martin case where an African American male was shot and killed by a neighborhood watchman. It is possible that if a different officer would have responded to the call the outcome would be different, but a police officer also has to put their life on the line to protect not only the community but also
Police brutality is one of several forms of police misconduct which involves undue violence by police officers. This is a problem, it is very dangerous and is also becoming more of an issue as time goes on. Police brutality can sometimes lead to deaths or someone being seriously injured. Some officers use extremely too much force when is not needed. It exists in many countries and territories, even those that prosecute it. It seems as if they target young African Americans more than any other race. Once a young black teen is killed it’s like nobody seems to care or as if it’s not a big deal but if it was the other way around then the cop would most likely be fired on the spot without any say so. “Often police officers build up negative feelings towards certain races, sexes, or religions. Officers tend to get the idea that if one or a few people treat them with disrespect, then other people of that same sex or creed will behave the same. Race consistently plays a key role in police brutality in the United States.”
