According to the USDA’s website, the United States agriculture industry contributed around 835-billion-dollars to the economy (web. August 16,2016). People may ask what is agriculture? According to dictionary.com agriculture is “the science, art, or occupation concerned with cultivating land, raising crops, and feeding, breeding, and raising livestock; farming” (dictionary.com). Should the law makers keep the farm and farmers in mind when making new laws and the food policy? Hamilton believes that when lawmakers are making laws, they should keep farms and farmers in mind. He believes that it is very important to educate and make sure people around us understand the importance of agriculture. “Should We Care About Genetically Modified Foods?” by John N. Agricultural subsidies is a very complex and controversial economic topic today. It will continue to be a hot topic as government continues it. It is largely debated in the United States as well as in other countries. The reason it is so largely debated is because it literally have an effect on the entire world market. Not to mention that the farm has been booming the last 5 to 10 years. This topic also tends to draw strong opinions in our area in particular due to the large agricultural community in our region. However, even within different states there are many supporters as well as opponents to these government subsidies.
The three contingencies of Patel’s plan include changing the governing laws of agribusiness, improving the conditions of and supporting rural areas, and changing the role of eating in society. Before much progress can be made, the ways in which businesses are required to operate must change. Without any new legislations to stand in their way, nothing will alter the ways in which they operate or the ways they look to further solidify their dominance. Next, rural growers simply need more help. In current conditions, they barely scrape by due to the increasing demands from their purchasers and the decreasing amounts of compensation collected. Contrary to the original perception, crop subsidies, most associated with corn, provide no help to these smaller farmers. They can’t compete with the mass-growers and their enormous swathes of land. It drives the rural farmers out of those particular markets, and it often prevents them from growing crops their land is most suitable for. First off, let's look at the sources of the American Ag Gap. The most obvious cause is society's shift away from agriculture. Since the Industrial Revolution began 200 years ago, more and more Americans and other people around the globe have been moving to cities. Today, eighty percent of Americans live in urban or other non-rural areas. While in some cities, especially here in the Upper Midwest, agriculture is still a vital part of the economy and labor force, in other areas of the country, such as the Northeast, Texas, and parts of California, people in the city have no concept of where their food comes from other than the local grocery store.

Growing up on a small family wheat farm in southwestern Oklahoma, I have experienced the harsh conditions of farming firsthand. The job that used to employ the largest amount of people in the United States has lost the support and the respect of the American people. The Jeffersonian Ideal of a nation of farmers has been tossed aside to be replaced by a nation of white-collar workers. The family farm is under attack and it is not being protected. The family farm can help the United States economically by creating jobs in a time when many cannot afford the food in the stores. The family farm can help prevent the degradation of the environment by creating a mutually beneficial relationship between the people producing the food and nature. The family farm is the answer to many of the tough questions facing the United States today, but these small farms are going bankrupt all too often. The government’s policy on farming is the largest factor in what farms succeed, but simple economics, large corporations, and society as a whole influence the decline in family farms; small changes in these areas will help break up the huge corporate farms, keeping the small family farm afloat.

Regulating what the government should control and what they should not was one of the main arguments our founding fathers had to deal with when creating our nation, and to this day this regulation is one of the biggest issues in society. Yet, I doubt our founding fathers thought about the idea that the food industry could one day somewhat control our government, which is what we are now facing. Marion Nestles’ arguments in the book Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health deal with how large food companies and government intertwine with one another. She uses many logical appeals and credible sources to make the audience understand the problem with this intermingling. In The Politics of Food author Geoffrey
