The environment has been in trouble for a long time. Americans have been dealing with air pollution, overpopulation, natural resource depletion, pesticide, water pollution and public health issues. These issues are causing environmental problems and had a negative effect on the environment. Most of these crises started in the early 19th century. The government got involved and started creating laws to protect the environment and the public.
Air Pollution is one of the issues of concern, as the Industry develop and grow, smoke was one of the endures that American had to deal with, this was created from manufacturing jobs and to help improve the living standards (Merchant, 120). By the 1920, where coal was used for domestic heating, “people with rain barrels on their roofs found the water contaminated with soot; city trees began dying” (Merchant, 120). Breathing in polluted air was causing human health issues (Merchant, 120). “The smoke and soot irritated the nose, throat, and lungs, giving rise to, or exacerbating a multitude of ailments ranging from the common cold to asthma, bronchitis, pneumonia, black lung disease, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and typhoid fever” (Merchant, 120). The poor people are mostly the ones that suffer from air pollution, they live and worked in the inner cities where the disease was mostly active (Merchant, 120).
