Air Pollution. Air pollution in Brazil remains a threat to the environment. In 2016, the air in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil was one of the most polluted of any city that has held the Olympic Games. Rio de Janeiro air has consistently had two to three times greater the number of particulate matter than deemed safe by the World Health Organization. While the global community critiqued the poor air quality, the Brazilian government played down the poor results stating that there were many different factors contributing to air quality and it was not all from pollution (Schlanger, 2016).
