Comparative Essay: “Examination Day” vs. “All Summer in a Day” There are multiple differences and similarities between the short stories “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar and “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. “Examination Day” is about a 12-year-old boy named Dickie who takes a government intelligence test and unfortunately exceeds the standard score so he must die. “All Summer in a Day” is about a dejected girl named Margot that gets bullied by others just because they are jealous of what she has: memories of what the sun looked and felt like. Both stories convey strong messages and take place in very alike settings. However, the authors use drastically different craft moves to tell their tales and teach their lessons which lie within the stories. The theme of “Examination Day” is to never to be a follower, or in other words, to be a leader, rather than a follower because followers may never be brave enough to stand up for what he/she thinks is right and may never make a change in the world. We can see this theme appearing when Slesar writes, “Your son, Richard M Jordan, classification 600-115, has completed the Government examination. We regret to inform you that his intelligence quotient is above the Government regulation, according to Rule 84 Section 5 of the new code”(3). This scene not only shows how incredibly unjust the government’s rules are, but also reveals that nobody has been brave enough to take a stand and change them. In other words, they decided to
The two short stories that we read in thisunit, “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury ,and “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, both have meanings of their societies. In “All Summer In A Day” the main character, Margot lives on Venus and gets bullied by the other kids on Venus because she has seen the sun back on Earth while they only saw it when they were babies. On the only day where the sun goes out Margot gets shoved into a closet while the kids that bullied her get to go enjoy the sun for the first time in 7 years. In “Examination Day” the main character, Dickie, gets killed because his intelligence quotient is above the amount the Government wants it to be. Both of their societies are highly sophisticated but, they are very different from each other.
The movie and the story are similar and different. The first similarity is they both take place on Venus. Another similarity is the sun only came out for an hour. The differences were they had more detail about the sun lamps. They also had sun kits. The last on is in the book they said that it has been raining for 7 years, and in the movie it says it was 9 years. These are 5 ways they were alike and
It is evident that the conclusions in each short story are opposite from each other. In All Summer in a Day, the story ends in despair, with Margot’s aspirations crushed by her fellow classmates. In If Only We Had Taller Been, everything that is wanted in the beginning is accomplished by the end, and the reader is left with feelings of fulfillment and triumph. Despite the plot, each story has other more substantial differences. The way Bradbury developed the poem and the short story contrast. In All Summer in a Day, the characters are obviously more developed, and the reader knows their personalities and physical features. Case in point, “Margot stood alone. She was a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain had washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the yellow from her hair. She was an old photograph dusted from an album, whitened away, and if she spoke at all her voice would be a ghost.” (Bradbury 1, 2). The reader can begin to comprehend the character that is Margot, in addition to what she looks like. Unlike in If Only We Had Taller Been, the author mentions two people, one of which the reader is not familiar with. By way of illustration, “O, Thomas, will a Race one day stand really tall Across the Void, across the Universe and all?” (Bradbury 1). These demonstrate how considerably unalike the way the poem and the story were
The short story All Summer In a Day by Ray Bradbury illustrates that someone who acts upon their jealousy can end up with a feeling of great regret. The other kids were jealous of Margot for almost everything she had and they hated her for it. She was different from the other kids in a way that she had something the other kids didn’t. She remembered the sun. The other kids resolved their jealousy by doing some terrible things. Jealousy can cause people to do things they wouldn’t if they were thinking correctly. Jealousy can cause much regret.
The short sci-fi story All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about being treated as an outcast and reveals the alienating effects that it may have. Sometimes this treatment is brought on by others. In this case, Margot is treated in this harsh manner because she isn’t the same as her classmates and they desire to have the life experiences that she has. Being outcast may not be the only main theme for this story in each reader’s mind. All Summer in A Day provides a multitude of possible themes. This may be the case, however, the children’s physical and emotional abuse of Margot is extreme and justifies this theme. As the time draws nearer for the sun to rise, Margot’s classmates become more brash and crue and at that moment, Margot is exponentially different from the other children in hr class. This concept of being outcast and
In “A Summer Life” Soto is the name of a six-year-old boy who faces a decision between sinning and not fulfilling his sweet tooth desires. This all started when Soto became bored and thought the only way to cure his boredom was through sin. Though Soto knows that sinning is iniquitous he ends up going against all of his religious beliefs and greedily taking the pie for his own longing to eat something sweet. Shortly after, Soto knows stealing the pie was wrong and regrets his decision. In “A Summer Life” Soto shifts from greedy to guilty by using striking imagery, potent ethos, and biblical illusions to recreate his story.
We have observed two different short stories, one called “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, and another called “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. “Examination Day” is about how when a person becomes 12 years old they have to take an examination determining their intelligence. Anyone with an intelligence above the norm is considered unacceptable. Anyone smarter than the norm is eliminated. The story focuses on a very intelligent boy taking his Examination, and getting killed for being too smart. The story “All Summer in a Day” is about a colony on Venus that faces constant rain and the sun shining once every 7 years. The story focuses on a girl Margot, from earth who is harassed by the others on Venus since she remembers the sun being
Lauren T. and Ray Bradburg used different approaches to convey a similar theme in the “All Summer in a day” and” The Day Mrs. Park Was Arrested” are similar and different in some ways, but i’m going talk about how they’re similar. The theme that they share is they were both push around by people, and both also stood up for them self . Example that Mrs.Park was push around but also stood up for herself .Bus driver says,”Y’all better make it light on yourself, and let them have those seats”.Mrs Park said “NO”! Now Examples that Margot did the same , when the kids tried to say she didn’t write the Margot stood up and Margot said, “I did “! As you can see both authors did come to the same theme but in different
All of my past summers have always followed the same path, but this year summer took a different path. This summer was more about surviving than having fun. They have always been about spending time with friends, sleeping, and just relaxing. When you are a kid that is what summer is all about, but as you get older it changes. This summer I had to juggle more than just friends and fun. I had to juggle work, practice, training, and just trying to hang with my friends.
Hsiang Lin gave away her purse to a crying bride in a pavilion never knowing what was inside of the of the purse she gave to the crying bride that was in the pavilion. Tony gave away the money he was saving to buy a saddle to buy his grandmother's bracelet back to her. Both characters were unselfish in wanting others to be happy.
“It has been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the dystopian story, “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury, it takes place on the planet, Venus. A group of children, along with scientists get to live there, while being educated at the underground school. Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.
All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about how a little jealousy can turn into rage and reveals that children, along with adults, can be blinded by something so simple. The author of All Summer in A Day believes jealousy and bullying are the key emotions played in this short story. Bradbury claims that the main characters, Margot, is being bullied because she was Earth longer. Whereas, the other students don’t even remember Earth because of how early they all moved to Venus. When Margot arrives, she was four. The other children had arrived two years before. The author describes her as “a very frail girl who looked as if she had been lost in the rain for years and the rain washed out the blue from her eyes and the red from her mouth and the
The 2011 Coretta Scott King Author Award was awarded to One Crazy Summer by Rita Williams-Garcia. Narrated by eleven-year-old Delphine, this story is set in 1968 in Oakland, California. The topics in this book include the Black Panther Party, child abandonment, and cultural differences; however, these are all told from a child’s point-of-view.
It was a gorgeous summer day. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the world was at peace on the seemingly carefree sunday afternoon. church had just ended and the children ran fast and free ready to play. They ran two and twelve towards the town’s lake to go swimming, in order to ward off the heat of the noon sun. They stampeded through town bumping over numerous people and even one another to reach the cool blue waves. The menacing multitude took a sharp turn from the street to an old dusty road. The trees shook in the evening breeze and swayed slightly further when the children hurried by. Dust faintly clouded out the light that poured over the path. Finally they reached the dock and began to take off and swap clothes. The boys took off their shirts and pants and swam in their underwear, while the girls chose to go behind some nearby bushes.and exchange out their attire. When everyone was in they started to splash one another while laughing and shouting. A few of them dived under the water to search for fish and other sea life. When they came back, up two of them had seaweed, one held a starfish, and two others had a crab holding it by both sides. It was getting a little later in the day, but the kids were not quite yet ready to leave their fun to rest. They decided to play hide and seek even though the sun was beginning to make its descent behind the green curtains that were the distant hills. One child counted while everyone hid and waited. As he counted out
500 days of summer is a story where a boy meets a girl, he falls in love with her yet she does not truly love him. The movie shows the progression of the relationship of Tom and Summer. It begins when they first meet when Summer begins working as a secretary where Tom works and progresses to them casually dating. Summer is obviously hesitant and against relationships yet Tom is overly eager to find the perfect girl. The story ultimately shows the demise and after effects of their relationship. At first thought anyone could think this is the typical love story where the movie casually progresses to them living happily ever after. This is not that kind of fairy tale love story.
