“Allegory of the Cave” is a dialog between Socrates and Gloucon in “The Republic” written by Plato. The image of the cave is a universal picture of the human conditions and a complex metaphor that applies to everyone in society. It questions the mentality and the biased point of view created by the society and human nature (which relates to stereotyping, something I will explain further into the essay). The idea delivered through the dialogue thousands of years ago is so general that examples could still be found in today’s society.
Socrates draws the mental image of the cave to his student in the beginning. The cave is long and dark, but at the opening to the cave you can see some light coming in. In the cave there are humans chained as prisoners …show more content…

In the allegory, his friends who have never left the cave and experienced what that one prisoner has mock him and look down upon his findings. This leaves the prisoner in a dilemma in expressing and communicating what is real to them. They tell him that he has been blinded by outside sources and what they believe is the truth because it has been in front of them all their lives, but the prisoner who left knows not to believe so because of what he learned. He is then left pondering about what is an actual truth and what is not, and this is terribly mind blowing. This is why I think the phrase “ignorance is bliss,” explains the allegory. Because at the end of the day, the prisoners who never left do not have to deal with the troubles of wondering about things beyond their created world, while the prisoner that left and came back must consider both truths brought upon him and make a decision of what to believe and have the responsibility of creating his own opinion. This responsibility cannot be taken lightly and can be troubling, while the prisoners who never left do not have this weight on their shoulders. This is how being ignorant may just be an easier way out then gaining knowledge beyond comprehensibility. Because overall, it’s less to think about; and overthinking is tiring to the
