American History: Our Hope for the Future “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” This quote comes from a Spanish-born American by the name of George Santayana. In order for America to avoid repeating its own mistakes, it is imperative to study and comprehend history. Many problems that the US dealt with 50, 100, or even 200 years ago are similar to the ones we face as a country today. What have we learned from our past missteps that can aid us in current crises? What can we learn from our past successes? Are we doomed to recreate history in an endless loop no matter what? The Civil War was a major mistake in our nation's history. Although some people may not have agreed with the war, they still needed to support the US. Today, we can learn that we need to support our troops under any circumstances. The men and women who fight for our country deserve nothing but respect for their bravery. Although the US has made many mistakes, there are also successes that we can learn from. During Hitler’s rise to power, America decided we would not ignore evil but instead stand up and fight for what we believed to be right. We can learn a lot from this in current times. Today, North Korea is a major threat to the US along with other countries. We see evil yet we are failing to do anything about it. We must remember the devastation of WWII and be committed to not letting anything like that happen again. In short, American citizens of today have a lot to learn from the past. We can learn how to stay united, be supportive and respectful, and take control. The US has made many mistakes but, it is our job to make sure that history does not repeat itself. I do not believe that our future is set in stone. The decisions we make today to move our country forward from our past failures have a direct affect on our future
