A stray kitten wanders among the dirt and bile polluting the corner of the street. Its mother was hit and killed on impact by yet another reckless city driver. In a panic, the kitten strays away from its fellow siblings and is completely on its own when it is found by an alcoholic man and his seven-year-old son. The young boy picks up the kitten who meows back at him; not knowing the difference between friend or foe. Who decides this kitten’s fate? Will it be taken care of or roughhoused and abused for the rest of its life? That is why there is a middle man. Many local animal shelters have volunteers to rescue these vulnerable pets before they fall into the wrong hands. Among all of the great non-profits in the world, I chose the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals because of its major dedication and passion for supporting those through rescue and advances in veterinary medicine.
As one of the largest and most active humane societies in the world, the ASPCA aims to help animals in all kinds of distress or dangerous situations. In 1866, founder Henry Bergh had an epiphany. He believed he was meant to provide the voice for those that did not have one; for all the animals that equally deserve the same care and respect at the hands of any owner. So this began the ASPCA, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
