The Amish have a amazing history, with a hard working life, and lots of myths to be debunked, they make up less than 1% of the world population. People think they aren't around anymore, or rarely exist, but that’s not true, they have been around since 1693 and became big in the 2000’s. The
Amish population increased 120% between 2000 and 2013 when the US population only increased by 23%. The religion started with a schism (a division between people, usually belonging to an organization, movement, or religious denomination) in Switzerland led by Jakob Ammann, those who followed Jakob became Amish. They began to move towards Pennsylvania and that’s why oldest members of the religion continue to speak Pennsylvania German.

In this video Leah and her brother Andrew and 3 other Amish people, are going out into the world to see what life is without having to follow the Amish faith. They go Great Britain with different types of people. They dance in a dance class, use a phone, drink alcohol, go to parties, and celebrate a pagan festival with their new friends. Leah, wants to do so many things but gets too scared to do some things, and ends up calling her mother back home to talk about things going on. Andrew her brother, goes on to have tons of fun and drink and party with his new friends and even has 2nd thoughts about returning back home to get officially baptized into the Amish community. Not all Amish people do have Rumspringa, but when they do, there are tons of different reactions and things that happen when they go out into the real world like this. Either they come back, or they don’t come back and they are shunned. So many things are different between the Amish and our inner city culture, things such as:
Inner Culture Amish Culture
- Electricity - No electricity
- Emo/goths - Same style throughout the community
- Drinking/Smoking - NO drinking or

But if you were to ask someone from the Amish community about a subject, I'm sure they would have a very different view, or weird way of taking care of it. Let’s say the subject of matter is hair. If you asked “Do you like my hair?” and it was dyed a bright green and short and you were female, they would most likely say no, due to the fact it is short, and it was dyed, which is NOT natural. They believe in long hair on females, short on males, and non dyed hair no matter what gender. Let's say you would like to join the community, they would want you to cut off all your hair, bald style, and grow out your hair. Ask them how they feel about gays and they might scoff and tell you it is a sin and that you need to turn to god, and pray to be forgiven and saved. Now, as the last example, we are going to use me as a example. I am a transgender male, but to them, i'm female, so let's say it like this, I am a female who has short, dyed hair, with gauges, wears pants, and is gay. They will not like me very much, and if I would want to be part of the community, I would have to be ‘cleansed’ which would be a baptism and praying a lot, also saying I'm not gay or trans. But if you look at the whole world, either people are part of the LGBTQQIAAP+ community or they support it, which means they are far different in not just this
The Amish is a group of traditionalist Christians that rely on simple living, plain dress and refuse to adapt to modern technology. The history of the Amish started in Switzerland in 1693 led by Jakob Amman. Today majority of the traditional descendants of the Amish live in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The religious schism began because of the making of Protestantism. The Catholic Church was corrupted in many ways, for example, the selling of
Culture can be defined as the totality of socially transmitted customs, beliefs, behavior, material objects, language, values, art and practices. Amish and American cultures have coexisted for more than 300 years, yet both are distinct while still sharing some similarities. Amish roots can be retraced to the 16th century, during the Protestant Reformation. Due to its ineffectiveness some reformers baptized each other, which outraged religious authorities. At the time, rebaptism of adults was a crime and punishable by death. In these reformers’ views baptism was purposeful for adults if they made a voluntary confession of faith. Anabaptism, the act of rebaptizing, spread across Europe. Ultimately, Anabaptists separated into two major groups: the Amish and Mennonite. In the search for religious freedom and stability, as a result of violence targeted toward the Amish, they migrated to the USA during the 1700s and 1800s.
The Amish are people who believe in Christ but have strict rules in their style of living, which is quite different from the modern society today. They live in a city in Philadelphia called Lancaster County, it is a very country style due to the acres of land each house has, the barn houses, and the animals. The uniqueness of their lifestyle to me is how they live in the world where technology is practically taking over every aspect, but they continue to stick to their beliefs and not change anything. To me it’s difficult to comprehend due to the fact that you can’t live like that in a majority of the cities today since technology is widely known. This is part of the reason why they live in their city far away in the middle of Philadelphia and have kept all their traditional ways. Part of the Amish belief is their separation from electricity since electricity is part of the “outside” world. They are not able to watch tv, have any public utility line running to their houses, or operate automobiles. It just blew my mind sitting there listening to how they live and how they follow all these guidelines in their life. For me it was different, but it intrigued me for some odd reason, just the fact that they have family time with no interruption, and dinner time with no distractions. Those two aspects alone bring families much closer and to me all the families in the world have become detached from true family time. Seeing their lifestyle and hearing all the guidelines they follow make me think of life without technology and how it would change our
If people did not know already, money is said to be the root of all evil. Nothing solidifies this biblical quote quite like what transpired to the Osage Tribe. While the FBI argued that the United States government officials worked to benefit the Native American tribe, it is my research that contradicts this by saying that the Osage Tribe were the targets of multiple conspiracies to steal and kill and the FBI was a part of it, taking into consideration 1) they sent people to “oversee” the Osage tribe money unnecessarily; 2) they knew about the suspicious killings happening to the tribe upon receiving their money, but neglected to intervene in time; and 3) they planned all of the Osage tribe’s misfortunes in the attempts to eradicate the bad
Every Wednesday my church has AWANA,a church youth activity, where at sign ups you receive a book of activities, challenges, and verses to memorize and complete thought out the year, starting around the same time as school.Sometimes that book sits there on my nightstand and I see it and think “I should do that tonight”,but don’t. Every Wednesday I end up scrambling to get it completed.Every Wednesday creeps up on me, and I don’t get it done throughout the week. Every Wednesday I get to the big nosy auditorium where we have AWANA and I feel bad about it,like I did it wrong.Every Wednesday I still got it done and I read for hour one night to finish my bible reading, but put off even trying to cram the thousand extra verses.
The Amish is a broad term considering there are Amish settlements in over 20 states in America. The Old Order Amish are different from more progressive groups because they choose to put tighter restrictions on what technology, worship, and leisure activity is allowed in the community. Many of the Old Order Amish groups have the same, or similar, traditions, values, and social regulations. For this essay, I will be focusing on the Old Order Amish of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster is one of the first counties that the Amish settled in when arriving to America. The Old Order Amish of Lancaster struggle with modernity in aspects like work and social life, however their Christian faith has allowed the Amish to cling to tradition and remain separate from the outside world while still thriving in it.
The Amish culture in general try to withhold the same traditions, values, and language as the original Amish. This individual Amish subculture in Indiana displayed in the Devil's Playground goes to show just how culturally diverse society can be. Though the ultimate desire of the Amish is to be a good example of Christ, the community encourages a positive deviance of their teenagers called Runspringa. Starting at age sixteen Amish teens are allowed the opportunity to explore the English world to better educate their decision to commit their life to the church and the simple way of living or leave the community turning to a life of relative deviance. This value contradiction often results in role conflict within the young people.
The Amish' extreme views and beliefs often keep them separate from the rest of society, which can have an impact on their overall health and how they
The Amish have been around since the early 1700s in the United States. They first migrated to Pennsylvania when they came from Switzerland and Germany. The Amish have spread to many other states, but today are primarily in the states of Ohio and Pennsylvania (Hostetler, 2009). The Amish have a unique way of life and have strong beliefs rooted in their faith. Today, the Amish are continuing to grow, because they are having such large families (Hostetler, 2009). The elderly population within the community plays an important aspect in the decision making and planning for the family. Through story-telling the elderly pass down to the next generations information about the culture itself. The Amish lifestyles and beliefs are what shape them as a community and what causes them to be at risk of illnesses and injuries more than other cultures around them.
The Amish are small communities around USA, usually they are isolated settlements where modern technology, including electricity is forbidden, and have strict dress codes, emphasize group cohesion; the rest of the most population in America relies in technology, specially electricity because is necessary to “feed” cellphones and computers, and the dress code does not apply everywhere, and where exist a dress code they are not
This name was given to the Amish that branched off from the Old Order in the 1960s. The New Order Amish settlements are found exclusively in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Although they are very similar to the Old Order, they use new farming technologies like the tractor and include the use of telephones and electricity in their homes. The New Order Amish perform missions work abroad, prohibit the use of alcohol and tobacco, occasionally travel by airplane, have more elaborate buggies, hold formal Bible meetings, and a lower percentage of the New Order church youth join the church ("Amish America," 2010). On a humorous note, the New Order Amish lean toward a clean courtship between the youth breaking away from the Old Order tradition of bundling where a courting couple lay down together fully clothed
From the beginning humans have identified with each other through the same beliefs, experiences, religion, and location. Through this identification comes a sense of place and community, otherwise known as culture. Most people cherish their culture and pass the traditions down onto their offspring. By passing down one’s culture it creates a very unique and diverse world. A unique culture that dates back to sixteenth-century Europe is the Amish (Kraybill 1989). The Amish formed by descending from the Protestant faith. This dissention developed a culture that has stood the test of time. Today the Amish live in several areas around the world but there is one group called the Swartzentruber Amish that calls Lawrence County, Tennessee their
The Amish live a different life style than we do. A lot of people misunderstand the way they live their life in rural communities. They think that the Amish live an old fashioned life and fear the real world. All they want to do is help their community every way they can. Each fellowship is broken down into districts where they live independently by rules their community agrees on. The rules consist of clothing requirements, color of buggies, household items, etc. There are around 200,000 members of the Amish in which come from more than 20 states. In fact, the Amish community has been growing. Every 20 years the population doubles.
