a) According to “The Law of the Lid,” an individual’s leadership skills puts a cap on how effective that person will be throughout life. In other words, potential success surpass the level of leadership a person expresses. Organizations can also be impacted by “The Law of the Lid;” the strength of the leader(s) limits the amount of success the whole organization will have. This law was put into play in my National Honors Society in high school. During my first year, the leaders were not the best quality. The members on the board were all involved in other sports or clubs and tended to focus more on those versus NHS. They had a low leadership level, and in turn, our club had a low effectiveness and success rate. In my senior year, the leaders all changed and were more involved in NHS. We had all talked about bettering the program and progressing the organization’s reputation again. Our leaders stepped up to the plate and increased the amount of activities we did for our community. These leaders had better qualities and therefore, our National Honor Society thrived. Leadership and effectiveness go hand in hand as “The Law of the Lid” expresses. b) Intuition is the ability to understand something immediately and comes naturally to a person. This is an important quality to have as a leader. John Maxwell addresses this in “The Law of Intuition,” which says that it is the natural strength of someone to be able to look at a situation and know exactly how to handle it
The present case study outlines the importance the leadership skill and identifies it as the most sustainable competitive edge in a progressively more competitive and boundary less business world (Hoch and Dulebohn, 2013). The case study on performance coaching with reference to the role of Darcy Gallagher gives the opportunity to comprehend the qualities and skills that need to be nourished to become an effective leader. The kingpin of the case study is the important elements of competency that affect the leadership outcomes and are influenced by the individual characteristics of the leader as well. The main purpose of the Coaching Performance to be conducted at Elmwood is to develop responsiveness to coaching facilities that are available in the daily work routine and aids the mangers to identify the problems of the members, the prompt responses to address their problems and add to the contribution made for long term career growth of the leaders as well as their subordinates.
Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal. The article “Leadership That Gets Results” by Daniel Goleman is an article that helps readers understand that there is not only one way of becoming a successful leader. Research indicates that leaders with best results do not rely on only one leadership style. Goleman, describes leaderships styles as array of clubs in a golf pro’s bag. Over the course of the game, the pro picks clubs based on the demands of the shot. Thinking is involved during the selection, but usually it is automatic. The pro is aware of the challenge ahead, quickly utilizes the right tool, and puts it to work. It has also been found that emotional intelligence
The ability and strength of an individual to achieve goals by supervising processes, guiding initiatives and employees is defined as Leadership skills. Valuable leadership skills include taking thoughtful decisions, allocation of resources, and the ability to delegate, inspire and communicate effectively. Other leadership traits include honesty, confidence, commitment and creativity. Leadership competencies can be used to effectively select, develop and promote leaders in an organization .The difference between Leadership Skill and leadership competency can explained as the required level of efficiency to perform a task assigned is known as skill whereas the quality to accomplish the same is called as competency. When creating leadership competencies certain factors are considered such as business strategies and future trends. To drive the use of competencies in selecting and developing leaders HR practitioners should use the business strategies. To effectively build a unique set of skills for the organization 's leaders, the firm will sustain competitive advantage. The role of a project manager has always been my interest. The position which I have always desired is a role of project manager.
For this assignment, I have decided to use the leadership trait, skills and style questionnaires. For this questionnaire, I asked 5 different people that know me in different contexts in life, such as personal, school, and work environments. For the majority, I rated myself higher on the traits than my fellow colleagues. On some of the traits however, I was rated higher than what I thought. Overall, I averaged a 4/5 which means that everyone agreed with the traits that were given. For the style questionnaire, I found out that I place more emphasis in building relationships rather than completing tasks. Finally, the skills questionnaire, my leadership skills are in the high range for technical skills, and my human and conceptual skills are in the moderate range.
After completing the leadership strengths assessment, my two strongest results were Influencing and Strategic Thinking. I have worked in the Sales industry for the past 7 years and one aspect for my success has always been with the capacity to influence the clients to do business with me and my firm. My personal mantra when working with clients is the adage of treating people as family. The client has the opportunity to experience this with each time we work together. Furthermore, each scenario must have an optimum result one is interested in reaching. In order to accomplish this task, Strategic Thinking needs to be involved as well. To reflect from the previous question; I would have an open dialogue with the group. Furthermore, once we would
Catalano implies that leadership is the capability of a person to persuade the actions of peers and other members of an organization, motivate others within the circle to work towards a common shared goal that may include providing high-quality client care, maintaining a safe working environment, developing new policies and procedures, and increasing the power of the profession. (Catalano, 2015). Leaders generally emerge formally or informally and may consist of new nurses or seasoned well experienced nurses. The leader does not necessarily have authority delegated to him or her in the clinical setting the “power” usually emerges from peers within the group. (Anderson, 2012) Key attributes of an effective leader consist of: Providing effective
During my relatively short time with my present company compared to that of many of my colleagues I have seen numerous changes in the senior management structure that has resulted in differing styles of leadership over the years from Autocratic to
In this review, my own organization’s leadership capabilities and performance will be assessed. This was my very first time taking a self-assessment leadership strengths test and I really enjoyed taking this questionnaire. The results gave me a clear indication of where my strengths and weaknesses lie.
leadership skills that come natural. The nurse is responsible for motivating, educating and directing the patient toward their healthcare goals. Although it sounds easy, being in a leadership role can be quite challenging and gets better over time and with different learning experiences. (Fagerstrom, 2011).
Good leaders will collaborate well with other people. They get along with others in productive and positive ways. To get things done, collaboration is important. Someone who can work well with others has a good trait for leadership because he/she can bring people together and accomplish goals. Effective communication is a key part of collaborating, and a good leader knows how to communicate to different types of people in different situations making them an exceptional collaborator.
The Trait Approach was the 1st systematic attempt to study leadership. In the 20th century it was known as the “great man” theory. This approach takes a look at the leaders personal attributes such as but not limited to: motivation, energy, intuition, creativity, persuasiveness and foresight. Some of the traits that are essential to this list include: intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity and sociability. Thus it focuses mainly on the leader and not on the followers or situations. The strengths of the Trait Approach includes: 1) it is intuitively appealing, 2) it has research to back it’s theory, 3) it highlights the leader, 4) it identifies what the traits of a leader should have and whether the traits we do
The law of the lid relates a leader’s level of effectiveness to their ability to lead their team. The higher a leader’s ability to lead the higher the lid is on their potential. One of my past managers of the chain pizza shop Little Caesars showed this law. Nick Vorphal started out working at the restaurant in high school and became the assistant manager of the restaurant within a year. To become the assistant manager Nick proved his leadership ability to the owners. From the start he excelled at understanding how to maximize profits for the owners, how to delegate his team with respect and how to connect with them in a way that made them want to perform the best that they could. Nick not only had potential, but also a natural leadership ability that led to a higher lid than the other assistant managers could reach within the restaurant. His limitations were only reached when he became the general manager of our restaurant and had no more room for growth within that company. However, upon realizing that he did not have any more opportunities for growth Nick Vorphal quick his job with Little Caesars to become the regional manager of five different locations with Barros Pizza. By challenging himself to a higher level of responsibility and leadership Nick Vorphal was able to develop his leadership ability and increase his effectiveness, in essence further increasing the lid on his potential.

We see leaders around us everywhere. Regardless of what the profession or expertise is, or what sort of an institution there is, leaders are required. There are many leadership characteristics that come into play. In other words, not everyone has what it takes to be a good leader. Surely, in school all of us are taught things like team work and good leadership skills, leadership itself falls under a huge category. There are many models of leadership present that serve to analyze and assess how much of the leadership qualities a person has in them.
