Woolwoths Holdings Limited is a public company listed on the JSE. Woolworths includes a chain of food stores, and a few of these stores are attached to department stores, and some of these stores stand alone in the Woolworths Food brand. Woolworths is in partnership with Engen petrol stations in most areas as this offers customers on the go to shop conveniently and efficiently. The majority of the bigger stores have a restaurant inside the store which is branded as Cafe W. The goods of Woolworths are traded in about 149 corporate stores, International brands add up to 51 stores throughout the rest of Africa and the Middle East and about 69 franchise stores across South Africa. Woolworths sells accessories and clothing under premium brands such as, Country Road, Witchery, Mimco and Trenery.
History and some general information about the company
In 1931 Woolworths was founded by a man called Max Sonnenberg. The official opening was on the 30th of October in Plein Street, Cape Town. This was in the dinning room of a Royal hotel. Later on in 1947 a crucial stage on the companies history came along, after World War II. This was when the company established a relationship with Marks and Spencer of London. Over a period of time the relationship grew between the owners, but later M&S sold their shares in Woolworths however still keeping a strong relationship and maintained close personal ties.

There are five different scales: local, regional, national, international and global. The local scale is when a business is found in the local area, for example Annie’s Salon. Regional scale is when a business is found in a specific region such as England. National scale is when the business is found in a national scale, e.g. in the UK (Tesco). International scale in when that specific brand is found in more than a country within a specific continent, for example Pupa which is found just in Italy and France. Global scale is similar to the international scale; however, the main difference is that in the global scale, the business is found in more than one continent, i.e. McDonalds. Sainsbury is in a local, regional and national scale as it can be found in the local area, it is in England, but because it is found also in other regions, it is national. However, it cannot be international as Sainsbury’s is located just in UK.
Tesco have been around from 1919 and has continued to grow and to expand ever since and is now a recognised brand nationally around the UK. Tesco was founded by Jack Cohen it originally started out with him behind a stall. The First Tesco store which opened was in 1929 in Burnt Oak in Middlesex. This expanded and became bigger by 1939 which led to over 100 Tesco stores across the country. Around the world there are 6,784 stores and Tesco have more than 500,000 employees all around the world which I am one of. From the 1990s Tesco’s became an international business of more than 3,200 stores. Tesco’s have become global white stores over 12 countries.
Macy’s is one of the oldest enterprises in the United States, based retail chain of departmental stores. (Hoovers.com) It was founded by Rowland H.Macy on 14th Street and 6th Avenue in New York City in 1858 with the name of R.H. Macy & Co. The corporate headquarters are located in Cincinnati, OH. Lately, the company was bought by Isidor Straus and Nathan Straus. Macy’s grew from its meager beginning into America’s department store. In 1994, Macy’s became the world’s largest department store company because of merging with Federated Department Stores.
For this assignment, the two contrasting businesses where both businesses have different types of ownership and liability such as one being a for-profit business and the other one being a not-for-profit business. The two businesses are Tesco PLC and RSPCA which Tesco PLC is the for-profit business and RSPCA is the not-for-profit business.
The Wal-Mart company was established on July 2, 1962 in Rogers, Arkansas (History Timeline). The company was based on the vision of Sam Walton, who believed in giving his customers the lowest prices, anytime, anywhere. By 1967 the Walton family owned 27 different stores, and in 1969 they officially incorporated, becoming Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Just a year later in 1970 Wal-Mart went National, proving the wide spread appeal of Sam Walton's beliefs (History). This same year Wal-Mart became a publicly traded company, with its first shares priced at 16.50. A short year later the company was listed in The New York Stock Exchange (History Timeline). The 80's were a major success for this company. In 1983 the first Sams Club opened, this was and still is a store that sells product in bulk to small businesses and individuals. In 1988 the first Wal-Mart Super center opened. The Super center combined a full scale supermarket with general merchandise to create one stop shopping convenience (History). In 1992 the company suffered a hard hit when Sam Walton passed away at the age of 74. Although they lost the man at the heart of the company they were determined to carry on with his vision, and so they did. In 1996 they opened their first stores in China (History Timeline). The first official stand alone store was opened in 1974, followed by Topman being introduced in 1978 exclusively for male customers.
