Stephani Soechting’s film, Fed up gives a look at how obesity became a problem over time, a serious problem. Throughout the movie as it goes deeper in on the food industries, the facts clearly show that they are the cause of the obesity epidemic. The film also focuses on children who have become overweight. According to Katie Couric, “many people think that kids are overweight for two reasons: a lack of exercise and increased appetites.” (Fed Up). Soechting’s film, it tackles the producers main claim and that is corrupt food making industries and reveals the truth behind the overweight and obesity epidemic of our nation’s children and the food industry is the cause of it.

Shouldn’t the blame be put on the advertisement being made by food industries? The main and soul purpose of the advertisements is to catch the attention of people, or is it not? The main thing people look at in these advertisements is the deals given and that’s what really pulls people in. In the film its points out and shows and advertisement for a chicken dinner deal for the family to eat. Now this would mostly pertain to a family and would appeal to them and pull them into the trap without them even thinking about. How is a person supposed to stay away from food that is bad for them when its right in front of their face on television and all around them when they go to the supermarket or even when driving? The food industry also uses small tricks like saying there are less calories in a food, such as Oreos. Oreos are Oreos, no matter how many calories in them they are not healthy. Dr. David Ludwig, the Associate Professor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, says, “you can eat a bowl of corn flakes with no added sugar or you could eat a bowl of sugar with no added corn flakes. Might taste different, but metabolically the same thing.” So, no matter what you eat whether its less in calories or not it’s all the same when you digest it. Fed Up, takes the faces of the young who struggle with being overweight and by doing this it creates an emotional connection between the viewer and the one telling the story. A boy who is overweight is shown in the documentary, Brady Kluge discusses his struggle saying, “I look at it as I’m failing and they look at it, as he’s just another fat kid.” Using this kid helps with the take-off of this documentary, which mainly uses different overweight children’s experiences to display how the food industry has affected them and caused their health
