Steven Universe is a TV show on Cartoon Network that centers around a fourteen-year old human-gem alien hybrid named Steven and his three gem alien guardians who seek to protect the earth from their home planet. His mother, Rose Quartz, led a rebellion group called “The Crystal Gems” against her home planet to thwart their plans to colonize the Earth. Years later, she died giving birth to Steven. For a children’s show, it has covered many topics, including defying the gender norm, mental illness, and abusive relationships. The relationship of two characters, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, is a sensitive topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. There are three points of view on the subject. They include that Jasper is the abuser, Lapis is the abuser, and the relationship was “mutually abusive.” When considering the characteristics that make a relationship abusive, and how the relationship is being portrayed in the show, all the evidence points to Lapis Lazuli as the abuser. On the show, the alien gems practice “fusion,” which is a process of combining the forms of two (or more) gems to form a single entity. Fusions are usually used for combative purposes, but can symbolize many types of relationships ranging to healthy and unhealthy. While Jasper and Lapis Lazuli’s relationship was neither romantic or platonic, their fusion is heavily implied to represent an abusive relationship. Jasper is a muscular gem soldier who was born on Earth but fought on her home world’s side of
The Sapphires directed by Wayne Blair represents the theme of war throughout the film with the use of cinematic techniques and setting. The Sapphires follows four aboriginal girls; Julie, Cynthia, Gail and Kay on their adventure to Vietnam in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War. The film follows the four girls on their journey around Vietnam performing for American troops while fulfilling their dreams of becoming a famous singing group. Throughout the film, Blair explores the theme of war through a variety of scenes and techniques. War ruins the lives of many people and this is demonstrated through the film with the use of cinematic techniques, setting and with the support of other themes. By exploring the theme of war, Blair is able to help the audience make connections to the film through the events and setting the character’s experience.
“Friends,” one simple word that helped Russell Conwell, a baptist minister, captivate and motivate not hundreds but thousands of towns, cities, and villages for his speech Acres of Diamonds. By using inviting words and phrases, Conwell established a common familiarity with his audience. Similarly, Joel Osteen, a televangelist and multimillionaire of the 21st century gives weekly sermons that receive up to 7 million viewers. “We love you,” is a phrase that Osteen uses to attract and give a home-like feel to his audience. Although Conwell’s speech and Osteen’s sermons are almost a century apart, they portray the same message: any person is capable of success if they have the right mindset and work ethic. While both preachers are extremely
In the film "the Sapphires", Julie, Kay Gail and Cynthia all try to help each other with finding what their identities are. As shown with the fight with Kay and Gail. Dave, the man who's all about soul music, tries to help the four super stars find their identity as he's older and more mature. Although he still tries to find his own identity he manages to find the four girls' identities before he finds his. Throughout the film, the four girls manage to mould each other’s identities, helping each other with their relationships, their singing and dancing talents, and their image. The four girl’s parents try to help assume their identities and discover themselves. this shown when they are provided with the news of the girls going to Vietnam, as Julie's mum says, "I suppose Gail and Cynthia can go, Julie stays here. She's too young." This is something that Julie isn't very happy with as she storms off while fail is quite impressed. These points show that family and friends can help you discover who you are, whether it be through easy or hard
Stargirl was another fantastic book Jerry Spinelli. He added interesting characters, such as, Leo the quiet and shy one, Stargirl unique and fun one, Dori Dilson Stargirl only friend, Archie the wise and elderly one, Kevin Leo’s friend that likes the stoplight, and Hillari Kimble the popular bratty one. This book takes place in MICA, Arizona. Now, in paragraph one I will discuss the plot of Stargirl. Next, I will talk about the theme in Stargirl. Finally, I will evaluate Jerry Spinelli`s job on the novel Stargirl.
In Arlie Russell Hochschild’s, “Love and Gold,” she depicts the economic influences that turn choices of mothers in Third World countries into a precondition. Similarly, in Toni Morrison’s, Sula, a recurring theme of the struggle between independence, the ability to choose, and doing what’s best for others, or coerced decisions, is imminent throughout the entire novel and revolved around the main character, Sula. Often times the factor that weighs down choice is responsibility. Choices are seemingly infinite until you factor in what choices will affect which people and why. Both mothers and caregivers have to put their dependent before themselves, therefore limiting their
In the passages from the novels The Georges and the Jewels and Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse Both were written in the first person point of view. In the first passage from The Georges and the Jewels the point of view is first and it is told in a person's point of view. In the second passage from Black Beauty: The Autobiography of a Horse the point of view is first, but it is a horse's point of view. There are a couple more similarities and differences on how the author uses the point of view to develop a character

‘Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes’ by Paul Simon is a piece for a folk/rock band with a world beat feel to it. This song portrays a story between a poor boy and a rich woman. The piece being composed in 1986, the modern era, has its focus set on individual expressionism. The composer achieves this through the songs aesthetic expression and his unique style of writing. This has been influenced by previous styles, and in turn has influenced concurrent musical styles.
In Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake we see the cause and effect of how our childhood and how we are raised has a large correlation to what type of adult we become. Through the character of Jimmy and later his new persona Snowman, the reader is shown the detrimental effects of an abandoned childhood. Not only do Jimmy’s poor choices in his adult life have a clear link to his neglected and unguided childhood they also create an adult that is emotionally damaged and unable to see the right path in his life even when he wants to.
As I first started to read ‘Oryx and Crake’, I was somewhat skeptical of whether or not I would enjoy reading it. The first chapter confused me with unusual words that I have never heard or seen before. Whenever I read something it is usually a book or magazine that I plan on reading or that is based on actual facts on a certain subject such as history or sports related. This book came as a surprise as I started to read it because it was not as hard to understand as I thought it would be and was actually quite enjoyable. The symbols in this book can mean many different things based on what the reader believes since religion plays a big part in it.
The ecosystem perspective can be defined as using a person’s family, social conditions, living situations, and even culture to help intervene and impact there life in a positive way. The subject that I want to focus on is the movie Precious. This movie is based the story of a sixteen year old girl Claireece Jones. She was continually raped by her biological father and has birthed two children fathered by him. This movie goes through the struggle to raise her daughter, (who suffers from down syndrome), and make her life better. She has trouble overcoming the struggles of her daily life, such as poverty and the neglectfulness of her parents. In an environment that is nothing but struggles and socioeconomic downfalls, she wants to overcome it all. She has help from a teacher and a social worker who really want to help her change her life for the better.
This documentary provided insight to the way that I saw the development of the geographic world. I have to admit that this was one of the good documentaries I have seen in a while.
The song “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”, performed by The Beatles, written in the year 1967, by John Lennon, takes the listener on a journey into the imagination. The most common interpretation of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” is that the lyrics of the song follow the journey that one would embark on after taking the drug LSD which would project wild imaginings. Other interpretations of “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds” are that Lennon had a girlfriend named Lucy and that the song is primarily about her.. During “Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds”, the imaginative journey emanates throughout in which adds to the
Compared to the night sky, holiday fireworks, and the power of erupting volcanoes, opals contain a majesty incomparable to other precious gemstones. One opal can display a vast amount of color with intense display. Extreme color variations in an opal can challenge even the most expensive gems, such as rubies, emeralds, and even diamonds. The birthstone for October and for a couple’s fourteenth wedding anniversary has a unique history and a list of characteristics that make it stand apart from other gemstones and solidifies itself among the best of all gems.
Monsieur Latin, a man who only made three thousand five hundred francs a year, fell in love with a young girl who seemed to be a very virtuous woman, one that "every sensible young man dreams of one day intrusting his happiness" (1). Once they were married Monsieur Latin's wife "governed his household with such clever economy that they seemed to live in luxury" (1). This quote gives us a hint of what exactly Monsieur Latin's wife was doing behind closed doors or in this case at the theatre. Even though they seemed to have a picture perfect marriage - it wasn't at all. Monsieur Latin's wife actually having an affair. In "The False Gems" Maupassant uses the theme of the story to show us that ignorance is bliss. By using the ironies in the
