The Every Week Magazine Project (http://everyweek.unl.edu ) is a digital scholarship project completed by the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under the direction of Melissa Homestead, Professor of English. The original Every Week Magazine was produced between 1915 and 1918 running concurrently with World War I. The weekly publication was printed in “a large format with colorful pictures of pretty girls by top illustrators on its front cover” and featured “an evolving mix of fiction, advice, commentary and news items, all with a human interest focus” (Homestead, 2015b). Figure 1 shows a sample cover from a 1917 issue of the magazine.
The complete run of the Every Week Magazine includes 166

Within the magazine Seventeen it can be clearly seen to reinforce the heteronormative agenda. The heteronormative agenda is the idea and rule that the original nuclear family is the correct way to formulate romantic relationships in society as well as the enforcement that homosexuality is deviant behaviour (Barrett, 29 October 2017). This can be shown through the fact that in over 100 pages of articles, ads, and other magazine generalities I found two accounts of identified homosexuality. This shows a clear lack of representation for homosexual, trans, or other non-cis identified groups. It's very clear that the authors of the articles and the owners of the magazine itself are leaning towards a heteronormative narrative and in that trying to reinforce that same narrative in its readers (targeted groups are between 13 and 18 years of age).
For example, the latest issue of Stylist (19th November) stars Lisa Simpson as its front cover
The magazine Ladies Repository: A Monthly Periodical Devoted to Literature, Arts, and Religion is a magazine that was published in 1800 and was targeted towards young women. The magazine was a way to help teach and encourage women of the time on how to properly fit in and behave according to the rules that society had placed on them. It taught them how to be considered an ideal, cultured woman with high morals and spiritual standards. Although many readers today would argue that the teachings and ideas taught by this magazine are extremely outdated and outrageously sexist, one must realize that this was society’s standard for women during the 1800’s.
Magazines have implicitly and explicitly been influencing humans for decades. They are continually more involved in the media, however the market is highly competitive. It is extremely important for magazines to maintain the readers’ interest and loyalty therefore they must excel in its appearance and content. Helen Brown created the Cosmopolitan magazine in 1965. It holds a spot as one of the most successful women’s magazines of all time, and proceeds to be the number one selling monthly magazine. (Ouellette, 360, 2005).
Lena Dunham bares her body on the cover of the November 2015 issue of Harper's Bazaar. She proves that she deals with the same things that almost every 20-something does.
These devices included newspapers, advertisements, radio and film; through the consumption of these devices women became participants in consumer culture. The development of American consumer culture began at the end of the nineteenth century and flourished through the 1920s; the modern newspaper developed, the art of advertising was taking its modern shape, radio became a household commodity and film became a weekly outing for many Americans. As cities in the East and West coast grew in the late nineteenth century, so did newspapers; newspapers played a vital role in the development of consumer culture in America. In the 1880s, Joseph Pulitzer’s Sunday World from San Francisco added feature material for women which increased the readership of women. Women who read newspapers were exposed to both the feature material, which included stories, and of course advertisements, which determined the economic survival of a newspaper.
Magazines are printed and bound publications offering in-depth coverage of stories often of a timeless nature. Their content may provide opinions and interpretation as well as advocacy. They are geared to a well-defined, specialized audience, and they are published regularly, with a consistent format.
The Magazine I chose was, Godey's Lady's Book, and Ladies' American Magazine. The genre was designed mostly for entertainment. This magazine has poetry, pictures, songs, articles about fashion and other subjects women might be interested in reading, engravings created by prominent writers and other artists of that time. The audience was all types of women but mostly directed towards middle aged women because there are articles with the titles like The Widow’s Story, Sweethearts and Wives, and The Second
The assessment of the journals for week 2 & 3 that I studied had the following strengths and limitations. The strengths of the experimental designs are: it has randomized controlled and real-life studies. Next, group populations such as women and minorities were used to test their studies. Third, emphasis was laid on HIV/AIDS, weight loss, or fat intake. Moreover, the strengths outlined with quasi-experimental designs are a part of the pre-test and post-test in clinics for women and children nutrition. Furthermore, the population becomes more responsive to fat reduction if someone takes the initiative. According to Burger (2009), “limitations given in the first journal Would people still obey today? said some participants, more male
Magazine became a great relief to all feminists by giving them a sense of self-determination and hope for the women’s movement.
The article I chose to analyze for this assignment is written by Peter Holley. The article focuses on the fact that Betty Shelby a police officer in Tulsa Oklahoma is being charged with first degree manslaughter for her actions in killing unarmed African American male Terence Crutcher. In our society today police officers are killing unarmed African Americans at very high rates. Stories like the one about Terence Crutcher are becoming far to common.
In 1997, Oregon passed the right-to-die bill. This allowed doctors to provide medication to their patient, that if taken would kill the patient. In the article from the Time Magazine, California’s governor has to decide if he will allow this bill to pass. Since this article has been written California’s governor made the decision to pass to the bill. Caplan, a NYU bioethicist, says, “If California passes it, that’ll be huge
