14256151 Audience Statement: With over 15 international editions, The Huffington Post can be described as a one stop online access for its readers to be informed of politics, business, lifestyle, and many more topics. According to the demographics provided from the Nielson Company, the clear majority of readers are well educated, most of which having a post-graduate degree1. This means that most of the readers are above the age of 19, and that using inappropriate diction (e.g. teen slang) could potentially characterize my writing as immature, thus deterring readers from the article. Moreover, images added into the article should not disrupt the tone, but instead, further elucidate my concepts. In addition, I plan to use a style of writing that is intellectually stimulating in accordance to the audience’s level of education. Since my audience includes people with a variety of educational backgrounds, scientific and psychological terms should be clearly defined so that all readers are able to understand the context of the article. However, such formal language should not restrict my writing to be perceived as dull and unengaging. Instead, I will try to deliver my writing in a way that will be informative, compelling, and easily understood by readers. Today's young generation has been getting a lot of slack from older generations due to the amount technology they have. Those who have negative things to say about this generation sometimes say that they're not as smart as the previous generations because of the new technology that is available. Literary critic at the San Francisco Chronicle, Cynthia Haven, argues that the young generation of today has actually written more than any other generation and they insert more passion into what they’re writing about as well. Haven’s purpose in writing about this seems to be to show how much this generation does write compared to what others have said in articles and
One of the main challenges that USA Today faces is the changing demographics of its readers. The new demographic of readers
The author’s purpose of writing an article can differ to major extremes depending on the type of discourse. At times the two discourse purposes can be similar, but a majority of discourses tend to lean towards a certain audience and purpose for writing. Academic discourses tend to weigh more on the informative side of persuasion than popular discourses do. The informative technique is accomplished through multiple studies, and experiments which back up the writer’s argument. Academic discourses are usually very fact heavy, and include numerous amounts of researches or studies. This amplifies the purpose for the article, and shows that the main target audience for an academic discourse is scholars, researchers, scientists, and advanced students. In contrast, a popular discourse usually falls towards the entertainment side of the persuasion spectrum. Popular news articles and discourses use only the important or interesting facts from the original article to keep the audience from getting bored. Popular discourses are mainly concerned with the audience and their opinions, rather than just the basic facts and research. The audiences that popular discourses
I will admit that I am rather new to the discussion on bigotry, privilege, and the various -isms. I was speaking with a female friend of mine a few months ago, and I remarked that women, on average, are less able to compartmentalize their emotions than men. She was (justifiably) irate, and I qualified myself.
This woman has had depression for years, she has been through so many events that other teenagers her age has been through. In this particular blog, she lists six things that many people said to her when they found out she has depression. The first one she said was, "But you're too young to have depression." I strongly agree with her response to that. I have a 9 year old cousin, she has anxiety and with her anxiety comes depression. One night she messaged me and she asked, "How do you deal with it? How do you sleep at night?" At that moment I realized that even a 9 year old worries about everything I
"Nothing takes place in bed but sleep; or no sleep. I try not to think too much. Like other things, thought must be rationed I intend to last."
No amount of sleep in the world could cure the tiredness I feel. I don’t know where I found the quote, probably on my endless hours scrolling through the internet, but it was my favorite quote and it somewhat applied to my life. Although, my life wasn’t the worst (I could have been homeless or had cancer) it was generally unbelievably boring. You would expect a teenage girl like me to go to an endless amount of parties… or maybe actually go outside once in awhile, but that was just not me. I preferred to be on my bed, curled up in the blankets rereading my favorite books or thinking about how my every action is all but insignificant in the grand scheme of things (Clarissa, she's my best friend since pre-k, calls those my “existential crisis’”).
The purpose of this memo is to compare and contrast two individual magazine websites: Seventeen and National Geographic. From their titles alone it can be understood that they cater toward extremely divergent audiences. Seventeen which forms a convenient source of celebrity gossip, fashion advice, and more, reflects the adolescent values, needs, and attitudes. For example, the overall format might reflect the average reader’s appreciation for gossip, speculation, or their need for a kind of vicarious thrill. The advice and tips scattered throughout might assist readers in making decisions. Alternatively, National Geographic contains informational articles relating to science, current events, archaeological findings, and much more. It is designed for a more mature, intellectual, adult audience
There are many differences between articles written for scholars and articles written for popular audiences. According to Anne Johns, the author of “Discourse Communities and Communities of Practice,” there are ten conventions or moves that exist only in academic prose and when violated, author is seen as an outsider of the discourse community. John Swales (“Create a Research Space” (CARS) Model Research Introductions) and Ken Hyland also talk about writing and the similarities between all academic writing in “Create a Research Space” (CARS) Model Research Instructions and “Disciplinary Courses”. Based on research by Swales, Hyland, and Johns on academic writing, and research by Jeanne Fahnestock, Charles Sullivan and Cameron M. Smith on

If you’re like most people, you have probably been told, when you’re struggling with a problem or decision, that it’s a good idea to sleep on it. It’s something that people say so frequently that it has become something of a cliché. Like most clichés, though, it turns out that there’s some truth to it.

STEM is more than a subject, it’s an approach to the world and a critical way to understand, explore, and engage with the world. In an increasingly complex and competitive world, it is becoming more and more important to emphasize the aspects of science, technology, engineering, and math. These are the fields of knowledge that allow our society to progress and compete on a global scale. The department of education states that a true system of education for global leadership will depend on a nation 's ability and willingness to shape schools to promote the advancement of STEM programs. A vast majority of young kids spend their childhood and young adult lives
In this essay, I will be talking about an article I recently looked at. I will be telling you why I disagree with its way of getting its audience attention. I choose this topic because I am very familiar with it. Even though I know about many things that are on the local news website ( www.newsnet5.com ) this stuck out because I have never talked about it on a school assignment which means that my opinions and thoughts about this topic may attract my audience in a good way.
