The case study is based on the issues faced by Frumherji Ltd., and the proposed solutions for the company. Introduction Frumheji Ltd. is an Iceland based company which operated in the legal metrology business of inspection and testing. It offered a wide range of services including the emissions and inspection tests, carwash and driver testing. It also held inspections of processing plants of fish, boats and ships. The majority of the profits for the company were contributed by the vehicle inspections which accounted for more than 50% of the business; the share of private vehicles inspections was 7 %. The Icelandic Government announced in 1997 to give the inspection business to the private sector. The state employees that were previously in the inspection business collaborated to establish a private company named Frumherji Ltd. This sector was highly monitored by the government and was subject to strict policies and restrictions. The authority which was regulating the sector was Umferðarstofa. The company held 75% share in the rural areas and 60% in the urban areas. They had to face a
The American automotive industry has been under a lot of pressure over recent years due to increased concern for the environment and increased global competition. An environmental scan on the American automotive industry shows that the global competition is a great cause for concern, new technology is providing an edge, emissions and laws regulating them are as tight as ever, and consumer opinion is reflecting concern for this.
Introduction Automobile usage has increased in America and elsewhere in the world. In a research done by Sutherland, J., et al. (2004) “The US has a contributed to 200 million passengers in cars and light truck over the past few years. Further in 1990, studies showed that US cars increased six times faster than human population. The leaders in the automotive industry must adopt some key elements to ensure success in this fast-moving environment. They must invest in knowing their markets, building brands, adapting product strategies and taking long-term view on their goals and objectives. This paper outlines some of the key factors which should be considered. Environmental factors automotive designers and engineers have always said the main threats in the American Automotive industry are the environmental factors such as fuel economy and the clean air regulations. Automotive Emission posed different problems than manufacturing discharges such as coal smoke. Increased fossil-fuel emission has resulted from the million car increase. Irritation smog, which is comprised of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, sulfur oxide and other various chemical mixtures are cited in major cities such as Los Angeles. These auto emissions are also said to cause headaches, visual pollutions, contribute to lung cancers and other respiratory disease. In the end, the engineers have designed cars that are better environmental performers, cost effective and fuel efficient to reduce the environmental
8. Enhance the enforcement of inspections of FFL dealers. In 2014, of the 140,000 FFL dealers in the U.S., only 10,429 were inspected (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, 2015). This means roughly 7.5% of FFL dealers were inspected during the 2014 fiscal year. By law ATF can only inspect FFL dealers once a year, but it seems they aren’t even capable of doing that. Dealers with expired licenses, hazardous store conditions, stolen firearms and a myriad of other issues and safety concerns go virtually undetected and continue to run their business. It is no surprise that the illegal firearms market continues to grow and that firearms dealers contribute heavily to this issue. In making sure FFL dealers receive their annual inspection, it would increase the chance of a violation becoming detected and therefore dealers possibly being more cautious and less likely to conduct illegal transactions.
The impact of technology affects the market because people are shifting towards the purchase of environmentally friendly cars. The business level strategy at Honda is in line with its enterprise and corporate strategy. In the motorcycle industry, the corporation is striving to build its products and services very close to its customers in a total of 21 plants that are spread across 21 countries (Hu, B.2013). The corporation also conducts Research and Development (R&D) in a total of six countries. The research and development system is tailored in its approach to producing products and services that are durable and reliable at the same time (Hu, B.2013). The focus of the Honda foundation is to have three main dimensions; social, economic and environmental issues. Environmental regulations Honda conducts its businesses in Japan and throughout the world (including North America, Europe, and Asia). A continued economic slowdown, recession and the sustained loss of consumer confidence in these markets, which may be caused by rising fuel prices or other factors, could trigger a decline in demand for automobiles, motorcycles and power products that may adversely affect Honda ‘s results of operations (Hu, B.2013). Regulations regarding vehicle emission levels, fuel economy, noise, safety and noxious substances, as well as levels of pollutants from production plants, are extensive
OSHA rarely gives advance notice of an inspection, however, there are several ways to be prepared. An OSHA Coordinator and Management Committee should be established to ensure the project is prepared for an inspection. These individuals will be trained and knowledgeable of OSHA recordkeeping, standards and regulations. Additionally, they will regularly check that up-to-date posters and notices are displayed and records are current. Routes for the inspection should be discussed with the members and managers in addition to implementing a system that will notify all managers and supervisors once an inspection is imminent.
Frumherj is a car inspection company in Iceland. They are one of the largest in the country, but they want to continue to grow and to outpace their competitors. However, there are some inefficiencies in their process that must be addressed before they can meet their goals. One of their first problems is maintaining an even flow in their process environment. Due to the nature of the inspections and the cold weather in Iceland, they are much more busy in the summer that they are in the winter. This makes it difficult to keep the right amount of employees. There is little they can do to avoid this problem, but rather they should examine their historical data to determine how many employees they will need in order to meet expected

In order to increase confidence in the government’s regulatory role in the economy, efforts should be made to: simplify government regulations and inspections; systematize and unify the work of inspection agencies and the procedures for conducting inspections; publicize clear and understandable information on inspections and the rights and duties of inspection agencies, and make taxation bodies liable for unfounded verifications, or establish an agency that registers inspections and limits the number of inspections. Many businessmen believe this would discourage frequent inspections.

The sales volume and market share of Hy Dairies’ gourmet ice cream brand had picked up significantly over the past two quarters compared with the previous year. Volkswagen has lost its reputation due to the recent emissions scandal. Volkswagen needs to recover its brand reputation and rebuild the relationships within its value chain, while pursuing its strategic goals (improving fuel economy with lesser emissions), in order to remain competitive in the automotive industry. To prevent future scandals, effective corporate governance needs to be implemented at Volkswagen.
This work is done to study the improvement of the quality in automobile industry. This chapter consists three sections named as “Problem definition”, “Objectives” and “Methodology of the study” respectively. The section 3.1 named as “Problem definition” describes the challenge or difficulty that is to be solved. The solution may be achieved after fulfilling the objective by using some sub-objectives that are described in section 3.2 named as “Objectives”. The methodology described in section 3.3 in details. This methodology has been devised keeping in mind the view of “Problem definition” and the “Objectives” that are suggested for the fulfilment of the solution for the problem.
