and perfectly demonstrated of how this poetry presented a sad situation where one of the characters experienced sorrow at night in the winter time of how bad behavior affected those boys. Experiences could make one happy or sad even though they may have experienced a situation in life, which they could not possibly live again but never forget. The poet expressed through her poem after each mistake one makes as human beings that we could learn regardless if they were positive or negative responses thru life experiences. Fountain mentioned “When I think of everything I’ve wanted/I feel sick.” (1-2) where she tried to express some points of regret for situations in the past that she would have done differently with the knowledge she currently
Structures the essay exceptionally well, has a compelling introduction and conclusion, and uses transitions to enhance the organization of ideas
Richard Blanco is a Cuban- American poet who was given the oppurunity to write an inaugaration poem for Barack Obama's second swearing-in. Lorna Dee Cervantes' poem, “Poema para los Californios Muertos” (“Poem for the Dead Californios”), is a commentary on what happened to the original inhabitants of California when California was still Mexico, and an address to the speaker's dead ancestors. Utilizing a unique dynamic, consistently alternating between Spanish and English, Cervantes accurately represents the fear, hatred, and humility experienced by the “Californios” through rhythm, arrangement, tone, and most importantly, through use of language.
The Poem “Introduction to Poetry” is by Billy Collins, an English poet, and it is about how teachers often force students to over-analyze poetry and to try decipher every possible meaning portrayed throughout the poem rather than allowing the students to form their own interpretation of the poem based on their own experiences.
While reading both stories, they both seemed to share the same theme. The theme that both stories shared is the dedication to do work even if it isn’t necessary. In, “Clearing Paths to the Past” The person states they have an obligation to clear their sidewalk so others can use the sidewalk to get somewhere. In, “To be of use” the person telling the poem explains how they love to be dedicated to doing work even when they do not need to do the work with any effort.
Take a minute to imagine “Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals,” “never/ ending blasted field of corpses,” and “throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles.” These are the vividly, grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.” Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about. “University of Iowa Hospital, 1976” describes what an extreme version of what I expected the poem to be about. The images I
Ben Jonson was said to be born June 11, 1572 in London, England. Jonson was educated at Westminster School by William Camden a classical scholar. Ben Jonson was a big man with a lot of courage. He lived with his mother, but his father; who died a month before his birth. His mother then married a bricklayer, Jonson then drop out of school to work for his stepfather trade. Love is a very strange occurrence, and can be displayed in numerous different ways. Barrett Browning dedicates her sonnets to her husband, this is how she proclaims her love for him. The quote I have chosen deals with displaying love for another individual. If love is stronger after death, when the couple was alive they must have had a strong unwavering love. Being in love is different for everyone, it can make people go cray, or be out of their mind giddy. On the other hand, one could interpret it as they were not in love during life, however, the afterlife will bring them closer together. If you love someone more after their death I would think one is feeling regret or remorse for the loss. Death is not a simple event to process in life,
Careely advocated new kinds of poetry that called attention to language itself, rather than personality and the voice of his poet is extremely unique. He created physical existence as sounds created by the body, and express his ideas and thought about love. Throughout his poetry he trying to locate the love in everywhere in her body and wants to take care the love that is coming from a beloved who loves him back. And never will hurt the lover because he basically promising himself. Real love have respect for each other there is no power control, no game, no craziness just hope and self-respect. While Creeley captures the tense giddiness of loving and being loved, he’s not doing it to celebrate that which can celebrate itself well enough.
“The Gardner” written by Angela Christmas, express the poem’s complex topic of raising a child with developmental delays. At a young age, the child in the poem was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other learning disorders. The child’s Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly called ADHD, would cause his teachers to him labeled as a problem child at school. He has always been separated from the other children and placed by himself. His disorders cause him to feel like an outsider in school as well as at home. As a mother, the poet found herself being a helicopter parent with all her children, but more so often with him. The theme of “The Gardner” is about that hovering, anticipating and uncertainty that
I think your feeling of loneliness and a longing for human interaction are correct. That is what the first part of the poem is literally talking about. Because of the way it is worded, I think it extends from this one person at the side of a lake shouting across to the cliff on the other side and becomes all lonely humans, feeling alone in the wilderness of their inner lives, and crying out for human interaction. What does the fellow in the poem get from his shouting besides the echos of his voice? He gets a living creature all right, who comes out of the rocks at the base of the cliff on the far side of the lake, slips into the water and swims across to him. But instead of a being a human, it is a buck moose which emerges, from the water, shaking
The lakes in the Southeast are beautiful, the mountains too. A thousand-mile view is bestowed on you. Please treasure your trip, you can't travel more than a few times.
Poetry is a reduced dialect that communicates complex emotions. To comprehend the numerous implications of a ballad, perusers must analyze its words and expressing from the points of view of beat, sound, pictures, clear importance, and suggested meaning. Perusers then need to sort out reactions to the verse into a consistent, point-by-point clarification. Poetry utilizes structures and traditions to propose differential translation to words, or to summon emotive reactions. Gadgets, for example, sound similarity, similar sounding word usage, likeness in sound and cadence are at times used to accomplish musical or incantatory impacts.
“Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed” declared by an influential leader Martin Luther King Jr. As a soldier againsts unfairness, King strongly states that people should fight for freedom. Driven by human nature, humans are always chasing freedom. In “A Century Later,” the Pakistan-born British poet Imtiaz Dharker uses the poetic devices of symbolism, diction, and allusion to explore how perseverance drives freedom.
In my preparation for this essay I thought that there was going to be very little that I would learn about the elements of poetry. This is not because I am an expert and have nothing new to learn, but rather the opposite. I have never really spent the time to break down and appreciate poetry. One of the reasons I think that I haven’t spent the time on poetry is due to my reading habits. I usually read to gather information and poetry is on the other end of the spectrum. Fredrick Gruber sums this up, “Poetry tends to give general truths while history gives particular facts.” (Gruber) Having said all of this though, I did see a couple of things that I could apply to my own writing. I will first start off with some elements of poetry that I
