Animal abuse and abandonment are a few of many forms of animal cruelty, and while efforts have been made to end animal cruelty, many animals are still suffering. Is animal cruelty right in anyone’s eyes? You would like to think it is not, but in reality there are many people that just do not care! Any act of violence or neglect perpetrated against animals is considered to be cruelty to an animal (The American Society of Prevention of Cruelty). Animals do not deserve to be abused for any reason (The Humane Society 2)! Animals are not humans; they are helpless and defenseless creations that can only defend themselves to a certain extent (The American Society of Prevention of Cruelty). While there are many people who are cruel to animals, 12,000 complaints were investigated of acting cruelly to animals (The Birmingham Post 1). There are many people, who do not care about animals being abused, but there are also people that do, and they are trying to end animal cruelty! Animal testing is widely popular. There are more than 25 million vertebrate animals that are used in testing in the United States (DoSomething.Org 1). However, not only vertebrate animals are tested, as high as 100 million invertebrate animals are used in testing as well (DoSomething.Org 1). While animals are being tested, eighteen red-foxes are killed to make one fox-fur coat (DoSomething.Org 1), and 55 minks to make a mink coat (DoSomething.Org 2)! Animals should not be used for clothing or testing, under any circumstances! Violent training and culling methods are examples of intentional cruelty or abuse (The American Society of Prevention of Cruelty 1), and while cockfighting is illegal in the United States, it was not until June of 2007 that this became a law in Louisiana (The American Society of prevention of cruelty 2)! Even people who are famous, break the law; NFL star Michael Vick was arrested for operating an illegal interstate dog-fighting operation (Siebert 1).
