Animal Testing And Scientific Research On Animals

Decent Essays

Testing and analyzing has played an important part of science and history; scientific researchers are able to study and research new diseases that arise on animals or humans—by getting precise research on medications or new experiments using live animals. Animal testing is any specific experiment testing used for scientific research, causing animals forcefully to undergo for a particular result, “An estimated 100 million animals are exploited in biomedical, aeronautic, automotive, military, agriculture, and cognitive research”( Animal Legal Defense Fund ), many of these animals are exposed to excessive pain and cruelty—forcefully injecting harmful toxins, surgically removing organs, or exposing to radiation. In 2010 roughly 25 million rats …show more content…

Many promising test on animals have despitefully failed on humans, for example, “Vioxx, a drug used to treat arthritis was found to be safe when tested in monkeys, but has been estimated to have caused around 320,000 heart attacks and strokes and 140,000 deaths worldwide”(Cruelty Free International). Monkeys may be the closest animal related to humans, however humans’ bodies and animals’ bodies are completely different which is an explanation of failure. Furthermore, some experiments done on animals may benefit humans, but the bad outdoes the good —“95% of drugs fail in human trials despite results in animal test”( Cruelty Free International ). Sixty percent of animals used in research are rodents (Stephen Baier, The Impact of Animal Rights) revealing how ignorant scientists compare rodents to humans, due to rodents being used the most in research. Furthermore, mice’s DNA is very different from humans as expressed in the human genome of both mice and humans, demonstrating major differences in the structure of genes (Human Genome Program). Additionally if scientist use mice then they can almost predict failure, because many promising alternative test should be used instead. Humans come up with morally impractical opinions or ideas for alternatives or observations to cover up ignorance—testing rodents lead to humans doubting the effectiveness of …show more content…

An alternative to animal testing that is humane and effective is, using human skin for precise results. In vitro test, test performed in test tubes using human cells, has proved it’s effectiveness instead of animal testing by testing chemicals on the human skin which proved its accuracy in testing chemical irritation as compared to animal testing done on rabbits which has a 40 percent error (Alternatives to Animals in Science). Additionally, human cells are a more adequate alternative to animal testing due to lack of pain and heartbreak animals endure, but not only is alternative testing harmless to animals, it also is environmental friendly and cost efficient, while improving the lives of humans. DakDak —an alternative test used to measure the effectiveness of sunscreen— reported promising results in days as compared to what animal test can do in months (Neavs ), less time means less money, more time means more money. These test are environment friendly because scientists are not constantly disposing toxic injected animals as waste, or disposing of thousands of carcasses. Alternative testing creates reassurance in science, humans, animals, and the environment as compared to animal
