The Unnecessary Cruelty
Animal testing is cruel and unnecessary. Many believe that the use of animal testing for products such as medicines and cosmetics is cruel and unnecessary. with advancements in modern technology there is absolutely no need for animal testing
Animals used in experiments are subjected to horrible practices and torture such as force feeding, being burnt, sleep deprivation and starvation just to name few horrendous practices. “Endangered species like chimpanzees is facing high risk of extinction… Since 1923, chimpanzees were used in biomedical research, pioneered by Psycho-Biologist Robert Yerkers.” (Ortigas). The huge demand in live animals for experiments leads to a decrease in numbers in their natural environment. This can have a huge knock on effect to the natural population and

“The problem is that [animal testing] hasn’t worked, and its time we stopped dancing around the problem. … We need to refocus and adapt new methodologies for use in humans to understand disease biology in humans.” (Zerhouni). Many diseases such as cancer in humans are preventable by changing lifestyle, adjusting the types of food people eat as well as being more active. Investment should be made and spent on education and preventative programs instead of animal testing.
On the other hand, animal testing has been extremely important and has saved many lives, and continue to do so. “The California Biomedical Research Association states that nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals.” (California Biomedical Research Association). The benefits of animal testing far out way the costs. If saving humans from disease and death means that there will be some loss in animal lives, then that is a sacrifice medical research should be willing to
Animal testing in unhelpful when it comes to experimentation. The research that is done on animals is rarely sufficient for humans. Even when the animal test was a success it rarely works on humans. It's also unhelpful in the fact that animal should have rights to. We place their lives in our own hands which is unfair.
Animal testing has contributed to making many vaccines, and saving thousands of lives. Experiments in which dogs had their pancreases removed led directly to the discovery of insulin, critical to saving the lives of diabetics. The polio vaccine, tested on animals, reduced the global occurrence of the disease from 350,000 cases in 1988 to 223 cases in 2012. (ProCon.org, 2013) Also Animal testing has contributed to major advances for treating conditions such as breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, malaria, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis, and many other diseases. Also there are no known alternatives for testing on animals because animals are 99% genetically the same as humans. (OpposingViewpoints.com, 2013) Another example of how Animal Testing has helped humans tremendously is that animals had helped create the inhaler, which kills around 2,000 people each year in the UK. (understandinganimalresearch.org.uk, 2013) Lastly, one other reason that Animal Testing is needed, sharks rarely get cancer, cockroaches can regenerate damaged nerves, and some amphibians can regrow lost limbs. By studying these animals people may learn how their body does all of this and apply it to human medicine. (amprogress.org, 2013) Animal Testing has saved many lives, and if it is not banned it will continue to save
Worldwide, there has always been a plethora of issues concerning whether animals should or should not be used for biomedical research. There are some advocating for the best and most-advanced medicine for the people; with disregard for the animal’s health. They believe people’s needs should be the first concern. However, others put the animal’s health first. If the animal is not in safe conditions, then it does not matter what medicine advances might be discovered. Biomedical research is defined as “The application of the natural sciences, especially the biological and physiological sciences, to clinical medicine” (“Biomedicine.” Dictionary.com, Dictionary.com, www.dictionary.com/browse/biomedical.). Without biomedical research on animals, modern medicine would not exist. Animal testing has enabled the findings of treatments for cancer, antibiotics for infections, and preventatives for illnesses. For these reasons, animal testing should be used in the process of developing biomedical research.
The majority of people believe animal testing is dreadfully wrong. As animal testing becomes a popular conversation argument, the main altercation is how unjust and crooked it is. Companies especially those in the makeup industry, have gained popularity and admiration for wiping out animals testing for their products even though the products have actually been tested before put out on the market. Animal testing is now grasped as an abhorrent business, but what others do not realize is that without animal testing, the medical world and other productions would not be as advanced as it is today. Even though it seems as though the cons outweigh the pros, there is definitely a balance between them. Animal testing can save human lives and the medications tested on animals can also become a medication for animals if it works; however, some animals contract diseases easier than humans and can suffer because of this testing.
To begin with, why is it done? Animal testing is done to protect humans from bad products that may hurt them, also to find ways to cure diseases that haven’t been cure yet. 95 percent of mice and rats are used for research. Mice represented the largest increase in research with their numbers going from 1.2 million to nearly 1.9 million in that period. Other animals also saw increases (Qtd animal experiment up to 73 percent, study says). Other animals that are used in research are rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, farm animals, fish, and insects, and also less than one percent cats, and dog’s area also used for research. Another reason is to treat injuries and learn more about the animal bodies to find the similarity to the human body (qtd. animal research). Animal testing is inhumane when testing to protect humans. Some people say testing on animals are life changing experiments and with the help of animal experiment can discover blood transfusion, kidney dialysis, and gene therapy for example cystic fibrosis and types of cancer( Coster 7). Others think experimenting on animal is cruel and they suffer a lot. It is true
I understand that there are different forms of animal testing. There is medical which I can agree with. Then there is the testing for the "name of science". Then there is animal testing for cosmetics. To me that is downright wrong. This testing on animals for cosmetic purposes is a problem that needs a major solution. Even though there are the benefits, there are the cons to it, the horrible effects done to the animals, the countless lives lost, there needs to be a solution.
In conclusion, some may say that it is unethical or inhumane to test animals who have no say-so in what is happening to them but if we tested humans and purposely expose them to health risks in order to research a disease, which is what would have to happen if we stopped testing on animals, then that would be just as bad. Animal testing for medical treatments is reasonable because it is the most accurate way to get results, without putting humans at unnecessary health risks, and it is easier to control their environment while monitoring animals because of their shorter life spans. Animal testing has also saved millions of
Have you ever wondered why animals are used in experimentation? Each year over 100 million are killed due to experiments for biology lessons, medical training, chemical, drug, food, cosmetic testing, and curiosity driven experimentation. The better question is why? Why use animal when there are many alternatives. Animals may not be able to speak up for themselves but humans have a voice for them. Many people have participated in protest, taken surveys, and created organizations to protect animals from the cruelty.
For decades, people have been using animals as the go-to method for testing scientific breakthroughs, but not only is this concept outdated, it is a cruel punishment inflicted on harmless creatures. Animal cruelty is a well-known problem around the United States that is a growing issue for debate. A study has shown that less than 2% of human illnesses are found in animals and over 98% are ineffective on animals (Peta2). “The Food and Drug Administration reports that 92 out of every 100 drugs that pass animal tests fail in humans” (PETA). Not only does animal testing hurt the animals, it is a waste of time. These are just some of the reasons why animal testing is pointless and should be banned. It is time that the United States recognizes animal testing as unacceptable because of its negative effects on both humans and animals: it is inhumane for many reasons, it proves to be very expensive and costly, and it’s pointless on many accounts.
Many of us are unaware of the sheer number of animals that undergo constant suffering in the name of human vanity. Animal testing was originally introduced in the early 20th century and is still prominent today. It is morally unacceptable to experiment on animals for human purposes. The procedures used in animal testing are cruel and inhumane, nor are they the most reliable source of data; resulting in many mishaps. Moreover, with the perpetual advancements in technology, there are several alternative methods making animal testing unnecessary. If testing cosmetics and drugs on humans is unacceptable, what makes it acceptable to test on animals?
First, according to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and others wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and “killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck breaking decapitation, or other means.” In the first place, the people in the laboratories are forcing the animals to suffer, without knowing how the animals feel. Animals have feeling too, they just can’t show it to humanity, because they are unable to communicate with human and people. Secondly, The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in 2010 that 97,123 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,365 primates, 5,996 rabbits, 33,562 guinea pigs, and 48,014 hamsters. Therefore, we cannot let the laboratories keep using animals to test their items and products, or else the animals will be in big danger. The amount of animals that suffered in pain in 2010 is unbelievable, we can’t let this keep going on or we’ll just lose our precious, fluffy bunnies and other poor animals to. Overall, after reading what is happening to the animals, this is cruel and not fair to the animals that are
Animal testing has been going on for years; however, few question the ethics of testing medicines that would cure human diseases on animals. Various animals being tested in labs and cruelly force them to be a host of harmful diseases negatively affect their health. Animal testing is cruel and unusual punishment and should discontinue. Animal experimentation is a subject that many know of but don’t know much about. Although it is a big topic, people still don’t pay much attention to it because of their lack of information. Experimenting is a cruel process that causes many innocent animals to suffer. Many cases of violations towards experimenting have been found as well. Testing on animals is unnecessary when laying down the
As the number of animals being used in animal testing goes up, many people pose a concern about the subject. There are around 100 million animals that are killed in the United States each year alone in animal testing (“Experiments”). These animals are tested for medical training, chemical, drug, food, cosmetics, biology lessons, and even curiosity driven experiments Animals including cats, dogs, rats, guinea pigs, monkeys, and many others are used. Alternative testing options are ways that scientists can still study and research different things while also saving the lives of animals that are used in animal testing everyday. Even though many people depend on animal testing to discover different cures
As human beings, we all have basic rights. Animals, on the other hand, do not get a choice in what is done to them. Animals being used for research dates back to the 1500s. It is estimated that 26 million are used for commercial or scientific research every year. People often disagree on whether animals should have rights. Though they are without a voice, they still have feelings and suffer from pain just as humans do. There are better alternatives to animal testing, such as ones that do not include the suffering and torture of defenseless animals. Although animal research benefits humans in numerous ways, animals have feelings and should have rights just as humans do.
Experimentation in animals is cruel. While the Animal Welfare Act, “the source of all federal rules and regulations governing the use of laboratory animals”, was created in 1985, it doesn’t protect the rights of animals (United States, Congress, House, Page 1). While the basic needs of animals are protected by this act, it doesn’t protect animals from being experimented on in the first place. Animals have been injected with diseases so that scientists can try, and often fail, to cure them. They have been given unapproved drugs so that scientists can watch their reactions. This ultimately ends in the death of these animals. They are being forced to cope with disease and pain that they would not have had to otherwise endure. In the name of science, we have burned, gouged, maimed, and traumatized innocent creatures so that humans can reap the benefit of things as trivial as cosmetics. Experimentation “is cruel and inhumane, and no amount of scientific
