Many of us are unaware of the sheer number of animals that undergo constant suffering in the name of human vanity. Animal testing was originally introduced in the early 20th century and is still prominent today. It is morally unacceptable to experiment on animals for human purposes. The procedures used in animal testing are cruel and inhumane, nor are they the most reliable source of data; resulting in many mishaps. Moreover, with the perpetual advancements in technology, there are several alternative methods making animal testing unnecessary. If testing cosmetics and drugs on humans is unacceptable, what makes it acceptable to test on animals? Animal testing plays a significant role in scientific discovery to better human health. …show more content…
One of the main cosmetic tests used is the “Lethal Dose 50” or (LD50). In this test, animals are forced to swallow large amounts of the chemicals being tested to verify the dosage level that will cause death (Corazza, 2017). It is known to cause intense pain and suffering on the animals. Chemicals are pumped into an animal's stomach until it dies. The reason for the intense pain is that it can take days or even weeks before the animal dies. In the rare case where test animals are not killed during the experiment, they are then, “killed either by asphyxiation, breaking of the spinal cord or decapitation” ("Ward: End support of animal testing by using cruelty free cosmetics", 2015). Humans use animals to test drugs and cosmetics but they do not respect the animal enough to provide them with a humane death. Animals are burned, blinded, poisoned, force-fed chemicals, genetically manipulated, electrocuted and killed, all in the name of science. How is the death of millions of animals fair and humane for results that are not necessarily justified? Additionally, animals also undergo immense pain and trauma in the pursuit of results that are not directly applicable for human use. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the U.S. has been using animals for testing to conclude that drugs and cosmetics are safe and effective before going into the human tests since the 1960s. These tests have been going on for
There are so many products being tested on animals , from being lipsticks, shampoos, makeup, skin care etc. But have you ever wondered the side effects these animals experience while using these products? They will experience Burning, torturing, pain, hunger, thirst etc. How is living in a cage living? It's not it is just surviving.
Animal testing is cruel and inhumane. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation, prolonged periods of physical restraint, the infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and "killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck-breaking, decapitation, or other means." [47] The Draize eye test, used by cosmetics companies to evaluate irritation caused by shampoos and other products, involves rabbits being incapacitated in stocks with their eyelids held open by clips, sometimes for multiple days, so they cannot blink away the products being tested. [48][49] The commonly used LD50 (lethal dose 50) test involves finding out which dose of a chemical will kill 50% of the animals being used in the experiment. [65][102] The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported in 2016 that 71,370 animals suffered pain during experiments while being given no anesthesia for relief, including 1,272 nonhuman primates, 5,771 rabbits, 24,566 guinea pigs, and 33,280 hamsters. [121]
Animal testing is used to see the effects of products before the products are put up for human consumption. With this testing, thousands and thousands of animals are kept in cages and subjected to pain and isolation every year. Even though these animals endure this extreme pain for the safety of humans, results are rarely the same in animals as they are in humans. Even though animal testing is deemed as bad science, people say that every major medical advance is because of animal testing. This is not true, since we have vaccines, CAT scans, MRI, and many more advances that are not due to animal testing. Do we even need animal testing? Animal testing is misleading, cruel, archaic, and is not essential to medical research.
Animals lose their lives in a horrible way so that we can have useless things like makeup. A lot more brands use animals testing then society would think. By law before releasing a new medication it has to be tested many times on different animals first. One reason animal testing is horrible because it hurts them for not good reasons when there is more efficient ways to test products. (“Animal testing is a bad science”)
The animals being tested may be 99% similar to us, but the other 1% could lead to many errors as animals vary to much in anatomy and biology and are insufficient models for humans. Animals endure chemicals being dropped into their eyes, injected into their bodies forced up their nostrils or forced down their throats. They are addicted to drugs, forced to inhale/ingest toxic substances, subjected to maternal deprivation, deafened, blinded, burned, stapled and infected with disease viruses. Animals endure significant amounts of stress and some are even held in confinement for an uncounted amount of time. Some experiments on animals require animals to die as a part of the test, for example, regulatory tests for botox, vaccines and some tests for chemical safety are essentially variations of the cruel lethal dose 50 test in which 50% of the animals die or are killed. Were all familiar with the phrase “putting lipstick on a pig” but some corporations are thoughtless enough to take it literally. Cosmetics companies have promoted animal testing for years. While some argue it offers insight into human endangerment. The FDA reports that 92% of drugs approved for testing in humans fail to receive approval for human use. This
Animal testing is an experiment used in science where animals are alive and are forced to go through pain and distress. Animals are being tested constantly in laboratories where they stay in cold cages. Humans believe that animal testing is beneficial because animals are put to the test to develop medicines such as Abilify that treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder where the drug is tested on rats, dogs, monkeys, and rabbits, furthermore, animals are also tested for cosmetics, for instance, Maybelline. Testing on animals is not necessary because it causes suffering, it is unethical, and it has been unsuccessful for human medicine.
Cosmetic testing on the other hand is completely evil. Although it is better to test some of these things on animals then giving a cosmetic product to a human and just wishing them good luck. Yeah animals have DNA very similar to ours but it’s not a perfect match, and it some cases products do fail and harm humans (Product Testing, par. 1). On the other hand it’s better than not testing at all. So while putting these animals through hell rather than giving someone a faulty product is good to save some human lives, it’s still not right. Cosmetic animals testing isn’t required by law and their are other alternative so why do factories keep killing innocent animals? All
Every year, millions of animals are killed by the cosmetic companies to test their products. These companies use powerful drugs and lotions upon innocent animals to record the fatal side effects only to repeat the experiment over and over again regardless of the creatures’ pain and suffering. They also give various reasons to justify the cosmetic animal testing. The cosmetic companies claim that they test on animals to establish the safety of their products and ingredients for consumers. These companies also feel that they are safeguarding the environment. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states that the companies do not require animal testing for cosmetics and alternative testing methods are available. In
Animal experiments happen all over the world, but are they necessary? Animals are tested for medical research as well as for cosmetics. Some say that these experiments are not painful, so they are justified. Where others believe that all these experiments are inhumane and nothing can justify torturing and killing innocent animals. Although many believe that animal testing is the best way to improve human health by finding new treatments and tests for the safety of the products, the physical torture and painful deaths of animals are not worth the possible human benefits.
Animal testing is something we have all heard about and/or read about. It is something most people would consider to be horrifyingly wrong. Animal testing is something that many claim to be against and will not support. The lines involving animal testing are a tangled web of blurry and missing pieces of a much greater puzzle. On one hand, there are companies that claim to be cruelty free, but the technicalities that are dug up beg to differ. On the other hand, there are big practices such as pharmaceutical practices that use animals to test on in order to create life saving treatments and medicines for humans. Do we make sure to buy cosmetic products that stray away from testing on animals but continue to take medicines
For those who are animal lovers and have pets at home, are they your best friend? Your pet could be tested on with products that we use, before the product is on the shelfs. Currentaly doctors are testing on animals to see if the products are safe for us humans to use. The Animal Rights Organization has issued that there is still defaults after testing on animals. These testing is not only hurting the animals but some have still harmed humans, we should find another way to test out the products, all these animal lovers and we are still hurting them, we all should not rely on animals to test on.
Animal testing has been around since 500 BC starting with dissecting animals in ancient greece. French animal testers believed that animals were “automata” and could not feel pain or emotions. There was no public objections to animal testing until the 19th century when there was an increase of adopting domestic pets. Nowadays public opinion is split down the middle on whether or not animals should be tested on. The animals are generally tested on for cosmetics, health, commercial, biomedical, space and military purposes. People for animal testing think of it as a way to save human and animal lives, and that there is no other way to get this good of data. They also believe that the strict rules prevent any mistreatment of the animals.
A significant amount of chemical testing is done on animals and is completely unnecessary. Many companies test on animals to evaluate the efficiency of a chemical. When testing on animals they usually check for skin or eye irritation after pouring harsh chemicals onto the shaved skin of a delicate animal, usually a rabbit, or it is dripped into their eyes without any form of pain relief. [1] Not only are they tested upon, but afterwards if they have not already died, they are killed by either: asphyxiation, neck-breaking, or decapitation.
A negative effect that does not get discussed enough is the effect on the caretakers of these animals. These caretakers’ job is, as the name suggests, to take care of the animals. Similar to a bond formed between you and your pet, these caretakers get attached to their subjects. All animals have a personality and have feelings. Naturally, when someone works with these animals five days a week and watches them grow, regardless of the environment, an emotional bond is formed between the two. Yet in the same breath, these workers have to harm the very animal that these bonds are formed with. This takes a huge toll on their emotional health. Additionally, this becomes a moral dilemma. Every day, these caretakers have to consciously make a decision to support the torture and killing of innocent animals. All of this is important to take into consideration when deciding for yourself whether you should support animal cruelty or not. By supporting animal cruelty, you are supporting everything behind it including the emotional turmoil it can cause on caretakers.
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
