Ann M. Martin once said, “I think reading is a gift that was given to me as a child by many people, and now as an adult and a writer, I’m trying to give a little of it back to others. Beth Brown is an African American woman who studied astrophysics. Astrophysics is an area of science which applies physical laws discovered on Earth to phenomena throughout the cosmos. Cosmos is the world or universe regarded as an orderly, harmonious system (Dictionary.com). Beth is a very appreciated and inspiring astronomer. An astronomer is an expert in or student of astronomy. She was an inspiration to women and minorities in encouraging them to pursue their careers in astronomy/physics. Beth Brown died at the age of 39 due to a pulmonary embolism. When she died, the astronomical community lost one of its most buoyant and caring individuals (Bregman 1).

Anne Dudley was born on March 20, 1612. She grew up in cultured circumstances and was a well-educated woman for her time. She was tutored in history, some languages, and literature as well. At the age of 16, she married Simon Bradstreet. On June 14, 1630, Anne finally felt American soil for the first time in her life. The Bradstreet family had moved to what is now called, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Anne had her first child in 1632, his name was Samuel, and he was born in Newe Towne, which that’s what it was called back then.
On January 31, 2001 Logan Marr was found dead in an unfinished basement, yards of duct tape surrounding her, and a foster mother claiming that she just fell and hit her head. Sally Schofield, a respected caseworker at Maine's Department of Health and Human Services, had taken Logan in 2000. By 2001, 5 year old Logan would be dead. “I just want Sally Schofield out of my life forever,” Logan’s mother says, 16 years later, “She’s ruined my children’s lives and mine. She took an innocent child from this world for no reason.” Logan’s death was a tragedy that highlighted the problems in Maine's child welfare systems. Flannery O’Connor was an extravagant author who lived a tough childhood. She lost her father to lupus at a young age, but continued to strive for excellence. She attended grammar school, high school, college, and earned a fellowship to Writers’ Workshop at the University of Iowa. At age 22 she was ready to start her writing career. Some of her best work was written in the twentieth-century. One of her books even won the National Book Award. She was clearly a writer of success. Unfortunately, Flannery O’Connor’s writing career was cut short when she died of lupus right before her fortieth birthday (1925-1964). However, her work of brilliance continues to live on without her.

She arrived in New York, NY on November 23, 1953. On the fifth day she was found her boat was full of water and the bilge pumps were clogged. "Anyone else," she wrote, "would have pulled up the floorboards, baled the ship out, cleared the pumps, found out why the water was coming in and taken steps to stop it. I did none of these things. They never occurred to me." Instead, she got towed by a passing fishing boat, going to France, taking 5 days to make it just across the English Channel.
